The threat of losing the House and Senate seems to have helped convince Trump not to go scorched-earth on Ford.
If Trump antagonizes women voters, it could increase the odds Republicans would lose both houses in Congress.

“Trump knows the Senate is not looking good,” an outside adviser said. “It’s all about the impeachment, he knows it’s coming.”

I don't think it's that obvious at all. China has lots of other markets to sell to, and the USA can't just start making iPhones in Iowa overnight: it would take a decade at least to setup all the supply chains and train the people. And at any stage if it looks like something is just about ready to go (for example, a rare earth mineral mine) there's nothing stopping China from selling off cheap for long enough to derail the project.

It's Trump against the world, here.

It's worth remembering that the US has put itself in this position. Nobody put a gun against Apple's head and forced them to build phones in China. Nobody forces US companies to buy Chinese steel. They did it because it was the most profitable course of action. China is definitely playing dirty with forced IP transfers and local partnerships etc. But apparently that's still immensely profitable for those companies. I don't have a lot of sympathy at all, to be honest.

Winning trade wars may be easy according to Trump. Not so easy may be hanging onto key senate and congressional seats when those states are being targeted by specific tariffs.

China is like a different world. We stopped off at Shanghai for a few days on the way to the UK a while back. There were two lads who's entire job was to stand outside the small hotel we stayed in, and open the door for guests. Every one of the raised grass squares along The Bund had its own man or woman in uniform, blowing a whistle to keep people off the grass. Our tour guide told us about her extended family who all lived in an apartment the size of our garage. AFAIK there is no Social Security or Benefits. If you don't work, you don't eat. You don't see many fat people in China. And this was Shanghai where rural Chinese dream of going to become rich, but rich is a relative term for them. America can't compete with a Chinese worker's low expectations of income and working conditions. How much more would you be prepared pay for the latest iPhone just to know it was made in New Zealand or America?

Sure - and I agree about the US putting themselves in the position.

I do however think it would be much harder for China to find alternative markets for >US$500 billion worth of product, than for the US to find alternative markets for US$130 billion worth.

China only takes 5.6% of total US exports. The US takes about 23% of Chinese exports.

That's actually not surprising in the least - despite being only 5% of the world's population, the US takes about 25% of most resources on the planet, generates about 25% of pollution, spends about 40% of the world's total on their military, yet has a POTUS crying poor and wanting to "MAGA" at any cost - despite already being the wealthiest nation on earth.

Agree. However, I feel that 25% tariffs will hurt the US citizens a lot, as they will pay as the tax will be passed on. In the medium term, China will still export a lot to the US as Id say a 25% tax added to a cheap good would still be better than US made iPhone or toaster. Short term the exports to the US will remain high, as they are so large and cannot be sourced elsewhere in quantity. If that's the case, China is less affected, and the US is more affected. As you say, China will look elsewhere, which is a long term issue.

Once the US shopper is hurting, all hell will break loose as their POTUS caused that wallet hurt

Yes - I don't think the timing / way this is being rolled out is coincidence, if Trump / GOP still hold the balance after the mid-terms, Trump will ramp things up even more.

I'm not sure how well Chinese exports will hold up against tariffs. I think there have actually been increases in US imports from China since this started, but there's a reasonable sounding theory that much of that could have been through increased demand for stock by US buyers - buying up before tariffs kick in and prices rise. Low interest rates at the moment may make the cost of holding higher inventory levels a sensible thing to do - when price rises are known and inevitable.

CNN - Donald Trump's failing grade on ethics

Washington (CNN) President Donald Trump loves to tout the fact that there has never been another president like him. When it comes to his ratings on ethics, he's right.

Gallup recently asked people to rate the ethical standards of Trump as compared to the seven men who held the office prior to him - so, all the way back to Richard Nixon.

The results were stark: Trump was rated as less ethical than each of his predecessors, often by overwhelming amounts.

The Point: Under the traditional rules of politics, a president who is regarded as unethical (particularly one who made a campaign promise to "drain the swamp" of Washington corruption) would pay a price for it.

Or is this yet another example of how political gravity impacts - or doesn't impact - Trump?

President Donald Trump is growing more confident that his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, can weather a charge of sexual assault and will be confirmed, according to two sources familiar with the confirmation process.

“I really want to see her. I really would want to see what she has to say,” Trump said. “If she doesn’t show up, that would be unfortunate.

"This is a very tough thing for him and his family. And we want to get it over with,” Trump said - before adding: "At the same time, we want to give tremendous amounts of time."
