Spain official: Trump said build wall in Sahara

"Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell claims that US President Donald Trump suggested Spain should build a wall across the Sahara desert to deal with the migrant crisis."

Maybe someone should sit Trump down in front on any zombie movie. When it gets to a scene where zombies break through a wall, say "see, you just need one hole..."

CNBC - Trump's attack on Kavanaugh's accuser creates a nightmare scenario for the GOP

The president shifts into full-blown attack mode against a woman who alleges that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school.

But the prospect of Trump on the warpath against Christine Blasey Ford creates a nightmare scenario for Republicans in Congress.

Republicans "had a strategy, which was to keep [Trump] under wraps," says a former counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. They "don't have a strategy" anymore.

https://www.newsweek.com/hhs-divert-millions-pay-detention-immigrant-children-cancer-research-hiv-1130817

The Trump administration will pay for immigrant detention by diverting millions from cancer research, other programs.

by Daniel Moritz-Rabson

"The Department of Health and Human Services is diverting up to $266 million this fiscal year to pay for the detainment of immigrant children, Yahoo News reported.

In a letter to Senator Patty Murray of Washington, HHS Secretary Alex Azar detailed his plan to redistribute money previously used for cancer research, other refugee support programs and Head Start, which provides children from low-income families with education, health and social services.

The funds will be sent to the Unaccompanied Alien Children program, which is overseen by the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

'Nearly $80 million of that money will come from other refugee support programs within ORR, which have seen their needs significantly diminished as the Trump administration makes drastic cuts to the annual refugee numbers,' Yahoo News reported. 'The rest is being taken from other programs, including $16.7 million from Head Start, $5.7 million from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program and $13.3 million from the National Cancer Institute. Money is also being diverted from programs dedicated to mental and maternal health, women’s shelters and substance abuse.'

Yahoo News reported that Office of Refugee Resettlement had 13,312 immigrant children in federal custody as of Wednesday, citing figures from the program."

CNN - Donald Trump's global insignificance is about to be exposed

Trump is a master of New York-style showmanship. The United Nations General Assembly, therefore, should be his finest hour: hosting world leaders in his town.

Instead, he is likely to be relegated to an irrelevant sideshow.

When the UN General Assembly kicks off on Tuesday, the depths of America's descent will be on full display.

Despite currently holding the presidency of the Security Council, the US will struggle to influence the course of events. ...

Weary from his past attacks and antics, other world leaders would just as soon avoid crossing paths with President Trump.

Is the soul of a nation exposed by its TV commercials? Like many people, I am fascinated and terrified by the mad tea party that is the Trump presidency. To try to gain some understanding of the crazy goings on, I have been spending more time on American domestic news sites than is good for me. In particular, I have been watching a lot of CNN and MSNBC.

Since I am watching domestic streams, I am also seeing American TV commercials. Americans sure do seem to have a lot of medical conditions I have never heard of. It is just ad after ad after ad of no doubt expensive pharmaceutical treatments (together with long lists of warnings about all the ways they can kill or maim you) that are apparently indispensable for coping with a whole range of exotic ailments that must be fairly specific to viewers of American news programmes since practically none of them are ever mentioned anywhere else. Maybe the news is just bad for you.

Anyway, I am struck by the number and extent of conditions being described and prescribed for. I also think Americans must be the best-informed hypochondriacs in the world to even know what most of these ads are talking about. Because the pharmaceutical companies there own the country, I assume the ads are aimed at the happy few who can afford health insurance, which must pay out zillions for the advertised remedies that people then demand from their physicians (once they have used the ad to diagnose themselves on-line).

So don’t be too hard on Trump. If he hadn’t withdrawn from the TPP, this is probably what we would be seeing on TV here. No wonder US media conglomerates don’t want overseas viewers peeking at their streams. Those ads are just embarrassing.

It is off-subject, but here's a quote

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3278148/

"What Is Direct-to-Consumer Drug Advertising?"

"DTCPA can be defined as an effort (usually via popular media) made by a pharmaceutical company to promote its prescription products directly to patients.

The U.S. and New Zealand are the only countries that allow DTCPA that includes product claims."

This is true.

There is a LOT of money in selling overpriced and often unnecessary drugs directly to consumers.

Fortunately NZ gets fewer drug ads than the US, with less extravagant claims of benefits.

More dirty tricks from the good ol' boys network around the Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh to create uncertainty around his alleged rape attempt.

"Ed Whelan, a conservative strategist and defender of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, apologized for making 'an appalling and inexcusable mistake' when he claimed that Kavanaugh's accuser had misidentified her alleged assailant as Kavanaugh."

The Guardian - Land of the free? How Trump has put America’s identity in peril

Extracts from a long article - a highly recommended read ...

Some 20 months into his term Trump has been pretty much the president we expected: loud, boastful, bullying, reckless, ruder than the worst-bred minor royalty, tetchy as a wolverine in heat. The main thing to note is the very most main thing: he’s still going. ...

Is there anything left to say that would stop it? Think of the hundreds of millions of words that have been thrown at him the last three years, every kind of rhetorical tool and tack has been brought to bear, and still he powers on. Fact-based argument, rational analysis, empirical proofs haven’t stopped him, nor have stark demonstrations of his laughably obvious lies. Appeals to Christian morality as expressed in the Beatitudes haven’t worked. The dry language of the law has been just as useless, the sworn testimony, the jury verdicts, the admissions of guilt from disgraced former advisers and operatives. Satire, derision, insult, scorn, all these bounce off his bones of steel like so many ping-pong balls.

It’s not even that he’s Teflon to all this; he thrives on it. Trump is a new breed of political Superman who eats kryptonite for breakfast; his enemies pile it on and he just gets stronger. ...

We, America, elected Trump. Putin didn’t do it, nor the trolls in St Petersburg with their zillions of busy bots. They may well have plucked certain strings in the national psyche – played us like a dimestore ukulele – but we were keen to be plucked.

But give Trump this: he offered one fierce, consistent truth over the course of his campaign. The system is rigged! And God knows Hillary Clinton was probably the least likely Democrat in the land to fix it, but then and now many millions of Americans seem perfectly willing to consign their fates to the billionaires and centi-millionaires who spent the past several decades rigging the system, which included corralling us into wage peonage in the name of the almighty free market.

We didn’t have to be corralled. Rare is the army or police force strong enough to force that. For it to happen we had to revert to the psychology of the serf who’s too brainwashed or lazy to conjure something better. ...
