Senate panel backs Trump's Supreme Court pick Kavanaugh

Republican Jeff Flake calls for delay on full Senate vote to allow for FBI probe into sexual assault allegations.

A Republican-led committee approved President Donald Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court on Friday, but moderate Republican Senator Jeff Flake called for an FBI investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against the judge before a final Senate vote.

Flake's dramatic intervention means a final Senate vote on the nomination could be delayed for up to a week so that the possible FBI investigation can be completed, if Republican Senate leaders agree to his demand. Democrats have called for an FBI probe, but Republicans had opposed the move.

The committee, with tempers flaring on both sides, met the day after a jarring and emotional hearing into sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh that gripped the country, with Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor, accusing him of sexually assault her when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denied the accusation.

"This country's being ripped apart here," Flake, with a pained look on his face, told his fellow senators. "I think we can have a short pause," Flake added.

"We ought to do what we can to make sure that we do all due diligence with a nomination this important," Flake added.

"Two emotional women confronted Republican Sen. Jeff Flake in an elevator. Earlier today, the senator said he would vote to confirm U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh."

CNN - Trump changes course by ordering FBI investigation into Kavanaugh

(CNN) President Donald Trump ordered a limited, week-long FBI probe of the allegations against his Supreme Court pick, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday.

It was a 180-degree turn from his previous statements about making such a move.

Washington Post - Congressional Democrats’ lawsuit alleging Trump’s private business is violating the Constitution can proceed, federal judge rules

A federal judge on Friday gave the go-ahead to a lawsuit filed by 200 congressional Democrats against President Trump alleging that Trump has violated the Constitution by doing business with foreign governments while in office.

The lawsuit is based on the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which bars presidents from taking payments from foreign states without Congress’s consent.

Trump’s business, which he still owns, has hosted foreign embassy events and visiting foreign officials at its downtown D.C. hotel.

It means you limit the enquiry - so that they can't find out what you don't want them to, clear the alleged rapist because the enquiry didn't look at the evidence you didn't want them to, blame Democrats and women, and get back to business as usual for conservatives these days - being evil in the name of God.

I despise Trump and everything he represents and for that reason alone I have doubts about anyone he nominates for anything, but sworn enemy CNN really does need to tone it down a little. Cuomo was so hysterically excited about the latest developments today that I just couldn't stand to listen to him any longer. We already have Fox on the right. We don't need another Fox on the left.

Having said that, there are many fine journalists and interviewers on CNN that I watch with interest and attention, but I don't think it helps when people like Cuomo go so far over the top to milk the moment. I hope someone puts a muzzle on him.

The Guardian - Trump orders FBI inquiry after Republicans vote to advance nomination

Following Flake’s insistence, the Senate judiciary committee later said it was formally requesting that the Trump administration instruct the FBI to conduct a supplemental background investigation that would be “limited to current credible allegations against the nominee and must be completed no later than one week from today”.

Which raises another question - what does "credible" mean?

"Look at how these Republicans are defending Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh:

Franklin Graham, Evangelist: 'This is just a shame that a person like Judge Kavanaugh, who has a stellar record, that somebody can bring something up that he did when he was a teenager close to 40 years ago. That's no relevant."

former Florida Republican congressional candidate Gina Sosa : 'I mean we're talking about a 15-year old girl, which I respect -- you know I'm a woman, I respect -- and we're talking about a 17 year old boy in high school with testosterone running high.

Tell me what boy hasn't done this in high school. Please I would like to know.

Miami restaurateur Irina Villarino: 'But in the grand scheme of things, my goodness, there was no intercourse.'

Lourdes Castillo de la Peña, Republican campaign coordinator in Florida: 'I have no sympathy [for her.] Perhaps maybe at that moment she liked him and maybe he didn’t pay attention to her afterwards and he went out with another girl and she got bitter. Whatever the situation, they’re kids. '

[audience reacts]

Republican women used to be a bunch of church ladies, and now they're basically Lindsay Lohan's mom."

Kavanaugh, solely on the evidence of his testimony alone, is barely worthy of being described a person, let alone being supposedly qualified to be a judge. His demeanour throughout much of his testimony was closer to that of a palpably unhinged maniac, with almost unrestrained aggression and absolutely naked displays of partisanship. Kavanaugh carried on as if anyone who dared to question him was the enemy -- the attack on the Democrat senator for her supposed drinking problem was nothing short of a disgrace. In contrast, Dr Ford's testimony was dignified and controlled.

Look, no one will ever know for a fact whether Kavanaugh is truly a sexual predator. But on the balance of probabilities, I have zero reservation in concluding that he's an utterly despicable person. I hope some Republicans would grow a pair and vote him down.

[Mod edit (MF): no funny names]

I fully agree. It worked for Trump

I have no issue wth Cuomo. He has debates, he gets one from the "left" one from the "right" and he gives them both a fair go and respect. That is is fair. Either side can make their own decisions. If you watch Fox their is only one decision

Creditable? Not heard of that word. Does it mean credit? I  know credit? Bigly. So he must be that word.

BBC News - What will the FBI investigation into Kavanaugh actually do?

Shot extracts from an in-depth article ...

The [Senate Judiciary Committee] duly requested an investigation "limited to current credible allegations" and concluding "no later than one week from today" [Friday 28 September].

Hasn't the FBI checked Kavanaugh out already?

You might be wondering what the point is of a fresh background check. Didn't the FBI do its job properly the first time?

The answer is probably - but it wouldn't typically look back as far as 36 years ago, when Prof Ford says the assault took place.

Why did Trump order another investigation?

The Republican side can't afford to lose Senator Flake's vote - and a week-long FBI investigation clearly looked like a price worth paying.

One last thing... Why only a week?

The timing matters because Republicans are keen to get their Supreme Court nominee confirmed before the US mid-term elections on 6 November.
