The Guardian - Trump professes love for Kim and hate for Kavanaugh torment in freewheeling speech

In an meandering hour-long speech in West Virginia, Donald Trump said he “fell in love” with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, while escalating his rhetoric about the supreme court confirmation fight of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Speaking about his relationship with Kim, Trump said “We fell in love.” He added “No really. He wrote me beautiful letters. They were great letters. And then we fell in love.” Trump and Kim met in Singapore this year as part of the president’s attempt to push the North Korean regime to disarm after earlier insulting Kim as “little rocket man”.

He opened his speech by celebrating his trip to the United Nations general assembly earlier this week. “I just left the United Nations, believe me they respect us now again,” said Trump despite the audible laughter when he addressed the body.

I hope that Donald and Kim will Live Happily Ever After.   wink

New York Times - Special Investigation - 02 October 2018

extracts from a long article ...

Trump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father

The president has long sold himself as a self-made billionaire, but a Times investigation found that he received at least $413 million in today’s dollars from his father’s real estate empire, much of it through tax dodges in the 1990s.

President Trump participated in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents, an investigation by The New York Times has found. ...

These maneuvers met with little resistance from the Internal Revenue Service, The Times found.

The president’s parents, Fred and Mary Trump, transferred well over $1 billion in wealth to their children, which could have produced a tax bill of at least $550 million under the 55 percent tax rate then imposed on gifts and inheritances. ...

After this article was published on Tuesday, a spokesman for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance said the agency was “reviewing the allegations” and “vigorously pursuing all appropriate areas of investigation.”

Trump's getting worse.  His slut-shaming attack on Ford today was particularly disgusting.

I'm ok with that. Saves me the cost of buying him another shovel if the hole he is digging for himself is self sustaining.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a rare press briefing today to insist President Donald Trump did not mock Christine Blasey Ford, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser, the previous night at a Mississippi campaign rally.

The mocking was so obvious, Fox posted a Youtube video called "Trump mocks Christine Blasey Ford at Mississippi rally"

CNN's Anderson Cooper discusses the White House saying that President Trump was simply "stating facts" when he criticized Christine Blasey Ford's testimony at a campaign rally.

At last count, the ACLU, 575 law professors, Amnesty International, many of Kavanaugh's classmates, roommates, the (US) National Council of Churches (representing 100,000 churches), and the American Bar Association have taken an unprecedented step of opposing confirming Kavanaugh.  (FWIW - the ACLU, the ABA, and the NCC aren't "left wing")

61 dirty republicans - led by a guy who boasts about sexually assaulting women - will probably confirm his appointment on Saturday.

Kavanaugh will do his darndest to prevent another Watergate - but oh not the crimes - he'll make sure Trump escapes justice for his crimes.

New York Times - The Senate Should Not Confirm Kavanaugh

The following letter will be presented to the United States Senate on Oct. 4.

[quoted in full as this is behind a pay wall]

Judicial temperament is one of the most important qualities of a judge. As the Congressional Research Service explains, a judge requires “a personality that is even-handed, unbiased, impartial, courteous yet firm, and dedicated to a process, not a result.” The concern for judicial temperament dates back to our founding; in Federalist 78, titled “Judges as Guardians of the Constitution,” Alexander Hamilton expressed the need for “the integrity and moderation of the judiciary.”

We are law professors who teach, research and write about the judicial institutions of this country. Many of us appear in state and federal court, and our work means that we will continue to do so, including before the United States Supreme Court. We regret that we feel compelled to write to you, our Senators, to provide our views that at the Senate hearings on Sept. 27, Judge Brett Kavanaugh displayed a lack of judicial temperament that would be disqualifying for any court, and certainly for elevation to the highest court of this land.

The question at issue was of course painful for anyone. But Judge Kavanaugh exhibited a lack of commitment to judicious inquiry. Instead of being open to the necessary search for accuracy, Judge Kavanaugh was repeatedly aggressive with questioners. Even in his prepared remarks, Judge Kavanaugh described the hearing as partisan, referring to it as “a calculated and orchestrated political hit,” rather than acknowledging the need for the Senate, faced with new information, to try to understand what had transpired. Instead of trying to sort out with reason and care the allegations that were raised, Judge Kavanaugh responded in an intemperate, inflammatory and partial manner, as he interrupted and, at times, was discourteous to senators.

As you know, under two statutes governing bias and recusal, judges must step aside if they are at risk of being perceived as or of being unfair. As Congress has previously put it, a judge or justice “shall disqualify himself in any proceeding in which his impartiality might reasonably be questioned.” These statutes are part of a myriad of legal commitments to the impartiality of the judiciary, which is the cornerstone of the courts.

We have differing views about the other qualifications of Judge Kavanaugh. But we are united, as professors of law and scholars of judicial institutions, in believing that he did not display the impartiality and judicial temperament requisite to sit on the highest court of our land.

Signed, with institutional affiliation listed for identification purposes only, by the following: ...

The above letter says it well.

Regardless of the outcome of the hearings and investigations, his temperament and behavior displayed during the investigation does not seem to be befitting a supreme court judge.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, and assuming the allegations are completely unfounded, his reaction and behavior in response to the allegations still has to be 100% beyond reproach. It just hasn't been.
