Putin can be justifiably proud of his protege. America almost on its knees and it hasn't cost him a rouble.

Wiki - Useful idiot

In political jargon, a useful idiot is a derogatory term for a person perceived as a propagandist for a cause of whose goals they are not fully aware and who is used cynically by the leaders of the cause.
The term was originally used during the Cold War to describe non-communists regarded as susceptible to communist propaganda and manipulation.
The term has often been attributed to Vladimir Lenin, but this attribution is unsubstantiated.

Right on, bro. Only problem for me-I hate to think of that festering a**-wipe as being in any way useful undecided

The thing about useful idiots is that they're only useful if you're the only one trying to use them. I can't help but think Trump's usefulness is diluted by the fact that he is trying to fulfill so many different secret agendas all at once. Even Putin probably has some specific goals he'd like to achieve over and above 'wreck everything'.

This has fox and friends foaming at the mouth about "deep state" and other BS theories.

The New York Times opinion piece referred to above is well worth reading. It is several pages long and is behind a pay wall.

Sorry, didn't realise it was behind a paywall (isn't for me for some reason).

Trump live on TV... Networks were deliberating on whether to air it live. Now it's going to be everywhere.

This isn't going to end well.

And if he declares a State of Emergency, he can pretty much do whatever he wants... Glad I'm not in the US.

Instead of Wall, Trump Offers to Station Pence at Border with Binoculars.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In an unexpected breakthrough that could end the government shutdown, President Donald Trump has backed down from his demand for a wall and offered instead to post Vice-President Mike Pence at the border with big binoculars.

According to the White House, Pence’s mission at the border will alternate between keeping an eye out for potential intruders and glaring menacingly into the distance.

At a press conference announcing the development, Pence appeared to embrace his new role as the nation’s first line of defense against illegal immigration.

“If anyone wants to sneak into the United States, why, lordy, they’ll have to get past Mike Pence first,” he said.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, denied that stationing Pence at the border represented a concession on Trump’s part and claimed that the Vice-President was “just as good as a wall.”

“If anyone can take the place of an inanimate object, it’s Mike Pence,” she said.

The New York Times - Borderline Insanity

Jan. 7, 2019

President Trump rained cruelties on immigrants and asylum seekers and now wants hundreds of millions of dollars to address the humanitarian crisis he caused.

As the government shutdown over President Trump’s demand for border-wall funding moves through week three, the administration is looking to cut a deal with Democrats by emphasizing the deepening humanitarian crisis at the border - a crisis caused in large part by this administration’s inhumane policies, political grandstanding and managerial incompetence.

In a letter Sunday to lawmakers, the White House laid out its latest proposal for addressing the border tumult.

The administration called for more immigration and Border Patrol agents, more detention beds and, of course, $5.7 billion to build 234 new miles of border wall.

The White House also demanded an additional $800 million for “urgent humanitarian needs,” such as medical support, transportation and temporary facilities for processing and housing detainees.

Translation: Mr. Trump’s mass incarceration of migrant families is overwhelming an already burdened system that, without a giant injection of taxpayer dollars, will continue to collapse, leading to ever more human suffering.

The situation is an especially rich example of the Trump Doctrine: Break something, then demand credit - and in this case a lot of money - for promising to fix it.
