The New York Times - Trump Walks Out on Pelosi and Schumer After 3 Minutes

[and after arriving 15 minutes late]

May 22, 2019

WASHINGTON — President Trump abruptly blew up a scheduled meeting with Democratic congressional leaders on Wednesday, lashing out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi for accusing him of a cover-up and declaring that he could not work with them until they stopped investigating him.

He then marched out into the Rose Garden, where reporters had been gathered, and delivered a statement bristling with anger as he demanded that Democrats “get these phony investigations over with.” ...

The Rose Garden Rant was along the usual Trump lines, with the addition of a new and ludicrous claim: "I'm the most transparent president probably in the history of this country."

Nancy Pelosi later gave a press conference of her own, where she sounded frighteningly old and tired.

She avoided direct criticism of Trump, but made a possible coded reference to his declining mental health:

For some reason, maybe it was lack of confidence on his part that he really couldn’t match the greatness of the challenge that we have ... he just took a pass, and it just makes me wonder why he did.

In any event, I pray for the president of the United States, and I pray for the United States of America.”

I have given up trying to understand developments in America. It is like a circus with too many things going on in the central ring. But I am convinced that something is going to pop. Whatever happens, will happen before the next election. There is no way this can carry on for more than another year. Either Trump will become dictator for life, or he will be carted off to an institution, or civil war will break out, or Mickey Mouse will become governor of California and merge with Mexico.

Seriously, this cannot possibly end well.

Trump’s Battles: Today’s State of Play

Here are the latest developments on the fights over President Trump’s taxes, access to the full Mueller report and more.

It was another wild day in Washington as President Trump stormed out of a three-minute Oval Office meeting with Democratic congressional leaders, Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the president of a “cover-up” and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin held firm on his refusal to release Mr. Trump’s tax returns to Congress.

But Democrats made some headway. In a victory for Representative Adam B. Schiff, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, the Justice Department agreed to release some documents related to the Mueller report. And in New York, state lawmakers passed a bill that would give Congress a path to obtain Mr. Trump’s state tax returns.

That was all before noon. Check back later for more.

Congress and the Presidency

As Democrats weigh impeachment, Ms. Pelosi accused the president of “a cover-up.” Later, Mr. Trump abruptly ended a meeting — three minutes in — with her and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York.

The Mueller Report

The Justice Department has agreed to release to a House committee some intelligence materials related to the special counsel’s investigation. It’s a win for Mr. Schiff.

The Fight Over Trump’s Financial Records

Mr. Mnuchin said it would be “unlawful” for him to release the president’s tax returns to Congress.

Also, New York State lawmakers gave their final approval to a bill that would clear a path for Congress to obtain Mr. Trump’s state tax returns.

A federal judge rejected Mr. Trump’s request to block his longtime lender, Deutsche Bank, from complying with congressional subpoenas.

The subpoenas sought decades of personal and corporate financial records, including any documents related to possible suspicious activities detected in Mr. Trump’s personal and business accounts, since 2010.

Trump’s Associates

Newly released search warrants detailed Michael D. Cohen’s communications with an investor tied to Russia.

The New York Times - Trump Walks Out on Pelosi and Schumer After 3 Minutes

[and after arriving 15 minutes late]

and now for the inside story:

The Washington Post - A Trump Twitter-style diatribe - live from the Rose Garden

May 22 at 6:50 PM

Trump had decided, with buy-in from his staff, to essentially ambush Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and others, according to accounts of the events from White House and congressional officials.

The Democrats had been invited for a sit-down on what both parties say is the pressing need for a funding plan for roads, bridges and so forth.

Rather than cancel the meeting, the White House let Pelosi and the others walk into the trap.

Shortly before 11 a.m., press secretary Sarah Sanders suddenly alerted the staff to prepare the Rose Garden for a news conference at 11:20 a.m.

Trump stage-managed events from there.

Democrats waited at a conference table in the Cabinet Room for about 15 minutes, said a person directly familiar with the session who, like others in this report, spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Trump’s name-card was on the table between those for Pelosi and Schumer.

“He walks in, goes to the head of the table, not even his assigned seat, doesn’t sit, doesn’t shake anyone’s hand. Stands there and begins a lecture,” one aide said.

It was textbook Trump, who has said that walking away from a negotiation is an effective tactic in business. In politics, it also changes the day’s headlines. ...

The Washington Post - Trump seems to be transparently mad

May 22 at 6:53 PM

This is not the work of an orderly mind.

extracts from today's unscheduled Rose Garden "news conference" ...

Positively everybody was out to get him.

They were out to get him in the third person: “They hated President Trump. They hated him with a passion,” he said.

They were out to get him in the first-person plural: “These people were out to get us, the Republican Party and President Trump.

They were out to get us.” What’s more, they have been after him “pretty much from the time we came down the escalator in Trump Tower.”

And now they probably will impeach him because they “do whatever they have to do.”

He raged on.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) has “been an enemy of mine for many years.” The “whole thing was a takedown attempt.”

The assembled press “ought to be ashamed of yourselves for the way you report it so dishonestly.”

And, even though he was the one who blew up the infrastructure meeting, he just knew that Democrats were “not really thinking they wanted to do infrastructure or anything else other than investigate.”

He ricocheted randomly among inchoate thought fragments:

Infrastructure. WITCH HUNT! Unemployment. NO COLLUSION! Drug prices. HOAX! A special election in Pennsylvania. ONE-SIDED HORRIBLE THING! Tax cuts. DON JR. HAS GONE THROUGH HELL! I love the American people. IMPEACHMENT! Regulations. A DISGRACE! ABUSE! ...

Trump's Fate in Merrick Garland's Hands

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Congress may finally get a look at Donald Trump's finances even though he does not want that to happen. A federal judge yesterday ordered an accounting firm to hand the records over. Trump is now appealing the decision, and the judge who'll be presiding over that appeal is none other than Merrick Garland. The guy whose Supreme Court seat was squatted by Republicans in Congress. Meanwhile, Trump has a new plan to pay for that wall of his, had a very bright pep rally in Pennsylvania, and HUD Secretary Ben Carson had some trouble during a congressional testimony.

The New York Times - Nancy Pelosi Says Democrats Are ‘Not on a Path to Impeachment’

May 23, 2019

WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday that House Democrats were “not on a path to impeachment,” even as she accused President Trump of trying to whip her caucus into a distracting political battle by stonewalling congressional oversight.

Ms. Pelosi, buoyed by two recent victories in court over the White House, suggested that Mr. Trump was too unstable to govern the country.

The president’s theatrical scrapping of Wednesday’s infrastructure meeting at the White House raised questions about his temperament and behavior, she said.

Mr. Trump had “another temper tantrum,” she told reporters at her weekly news conference at the Capitol.

“Again, I pray for the president of the United States. I wish that his family or his administration or his staff would have an intervention for the good of the country.”

Her remarks - intended to belittle Mr. Trump in the same way he denigrates his political opponents - are part of a calculated campaign by the speaker to pair public comments with private calls for House Democrats to avoid being goaded into impeachment. ...

The Washington Post - Pelosi says Trump wants to be impeached and is angry that House Democrats are not moving in that direction

May 23 at 4:29 PM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed Thursday that President Trump wants to be impeached and is upset that House Democrats are not rushing in that direction now, as tensions continued to mount between the White House and her party.

“The White House is just crying out for impeachment,” Pelosi said at a news conference. “That’s why he flipped yesterday.”

She referred to Trump’s abrupt exit from a White House meeting Wednesday with Democratic leaders on the nation’s infrastructure.

Speaking to a closed-door meeting of top House Democrats earlier Thursday, Pelosi speculated that Trump thinks he would benefit politically from being impeached in the House and acquitted in the Republican-led Senate.

“He wants to be impeached, so he can be exonerated by the Senate,” she told her colleagues, according to a Democratic official familiar with the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Pelosi’s comments came a day after Trump declared he could not work with Democrats on legislation while House investigations continue. He angrily walked out of a White House meeting with Pelosi and other top Democrats on infrastructure.

Further goading Trump, she added, “I wish that his family or his staff or his administration would have an intervention, for the good of the country.” ...

Trump retweets a doctored video of Pelosi attempting to show her drunk, and allows AG Barr to declassify selected documents to assist in his narrative that there were illegal investigations into him leading up to the 2016 election.

The longer the Democrats leave Trump unchecked in office, the harder it will be for US to retain any semblance of democracy. They really do seem ill equipped to deal with his level of corruption and contempt for the separation of powers that are meant to protect the US from someone precisely like him.
