The New York Times - What Happened Today in the Trump Impeachment Inquiry

Oct. 11, 2019

  • Marie Yovanovitch, the former American ambassador to Ukraine, told impeachment investigators in a closed-door interview that a top State Department official told her that President Trump had pushed for her removal even though the department believed she had “done nothing wrong.”

  • Ms. Yovanovitch said people associated with Rudy Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, “may well have believed that their personal financial ambitions were stymied by our anti-corruption policy in Ukraine.”

  • Gordon Sondland, the American ambassador to the European Union, like Ms. Yovanovitch, agreed to comply with a House subpoena and testify, defying a State Department order not to appear.

Ms. Yovanovitch delivered her searing account before Congress at the risk of losing her job, since the White House has ordered officials not to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry.

Today's rulings against Trump administration

  • New York Judge blocks rule to limit legal status for those who use public benefits

  • Texas Judge rules Trump's use of emergency funds to build border wall unlawful

  • Appeals Court rules Congress can see Trump tax documents

Judges rule against Trump three times in one day

    CNN

The Trump administration was dealt three legal setbacks after a federal judge in New York blocked a ruling that made it more difficult for immigrants to obtain legal status if they were seeking public assistance.

Another judge in Texas ruled that the President's use of emergency funds to build his border wall is unlawful - specifically about re-allocating military construction dollars.

An appeals court in Washington ruled the President's accounting firm must now comply with House Democrats' demands for eight years of his tax documents. Trump's legal team lost an appeal to stop a congressional subpoena.

The Washington Post - How two Soviet-born emigres made it into elite Trump circles - and the center of the impeachment storm

Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, flanked by attorneys Kevin Downing, left, and Thomas Zehnle, right, appear before U.S. Judge Michael Nachmanoff in federal court in Alexandria on Thursday.

    12 October

extracts from a long and detailed article

[in 2016] Lev Parnas, a Ukrainian-born emigre, ... made a $50,000 donation to Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party, and it quickly opened doors.

The contribution helped propel Parnas and his business partner, Belarus-born Igor Fruman, on an extraordinarily rapid rise into the upper echelon of Trump allies - before they became central figures in the presidential impeachment inquiry.

By spring 2018, the two men had dined with Trump, breakfasted with his son and attended exclusive events at Mar-a-Lago and the White House, all while jetting around the world and spending lavishly, particularly at Trump hotels in New York and Washington. ...

Where Parnas and Fruman got their money remains a mystery. ...

Parnas and Fruman’s myriad political and business ventures came to an abrupt halt Wednesday.

The duo had lunched that day with Giuliani at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, according to the Wall Street Journal.*

Hours later, they were at Dulles Airport, about to board a plane to Europe, when authorities in the hallway stopped them and asked to see their passports ...

Soon, about a dozen plainclothes investigators converged on the scene, and the two men were led away.

    What a bunch of sweethearts.

Funny Trump forgot about these wealthy donors, who contributed at least $400,000.

He lunched with them. To quote the Washington Post was "just eight people who met privately with the president and discussed the upcoming midterm elections." Later the pair breakfasted at the Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge with Donald Trump Jr. and Tommy Hicks Jr., a close friend of the president’s son and top RNC official. One posted a picture with the hashtag “#Trump2020”.

I love this quote: "Their new lawyer, John Dowd — who also previously served as a personal attorney for Trump — declined to respond to a number of questions [from the Washington Post] about the two men, writing only in an email, 'You publish at your peril.'"

In other words, "I'm willing to use a SLAAP suit against the Washington Post: 'Strategic lawsuit against public participation'"

While this threat would work on poorer newspapers, I think Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon, may enough enough money to pay for the Posts' legal council.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo really didn't like this grilling by a local reporter.

She pressed Pompeo on the latest news in the Trump-Ukraine scandal. She questioned him about the resignation of one of his senior advisers and the ouster of a U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. She asked three times whether he met with Trump attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani while in Warsaw, and he refused to say.

RAW: Mike Pompeo Interviewed by News4's Nancy Amons in Nashville

    8 minute video.

    You can skip to 0:55.

He used his well-practiced disdainful poker face by 1:30, and said "you should be careful" shortly after.

Fred99: Queen Made Donald Trump Take Down

If would be funny if some Trump event used "Happy Birthday to You" and was forced to remove a video due to the copyright.

You can thank Disney, and other mega-corporations, lobbying for the frankly absurd length of copyrights.

"Happy Birthday to You" was written in 1935.

To emphasize how long "Happy Birthday to You" was written, in 1935 the first woman flew solo across the South Atlantic, taking 2 days.

In 1988, Warner/Chappell Music purchased the company owning the copyright for US$25 million, with the value of "Happy Birthday" estimated at US$5 million.

Based on the 1935 copyright registration, Warner claimed that the United States copyright will not expire until 2030

I saw somewhere that Happy Birthday had finally expired and entered the public domain. Is that not correct, then?

In the European Union, copyright lasts for the life of the author(s) plus 70 years; since Patty Hill (the last surviving author) died in 1946, the copyright in the EU expired on January 1, 2017.

To continue to stray off subject, patents are the reason why insulin is expensive.
