Preliminary indications are that the Democrats have won in Kentucky and Virginia. Mississippi went to the Republican, but that is no surprise.

The Washington Post - What Trump’s climate surrender means for the world

today

This week, President Trump made it official.

He confirmed his country’s plans to officially withdraw from the Paris climate accord in a year’s time - that is, a day after the 2020 presidential election. ...

Trump makes no secret of his distaste for the Paris agreement, which he has branded a “total disaster” and a supposedly unfair constraint on American business.

Beyond pulling out of the accord, the White House has set about dismantling Obama-era environmental regulations at home ...

The rest of the world, though, has lost patience.

As the president fiddles in Washington, a vast army of experts warn of a world on fire.

On Tuesday, a new report by 11,258 scientists from 153 countries declared that the planet “clearly and unequivocally faces a climate emergency.”

It called on governments to “implement massive energy efficiency and conservation practices” and to leave the world’s remaining untapped fossil fuels, like coal and oil, in the ground.

(This summer, Trump pointedly declared that he didn’t want “to lose that wealth … on dreams, on windmills.”) ...

gzt: The man hasn't figured out that warming will affect American lives to a massive extent. It's not that hard. America's fate is the fate of the Earth. Earth last is America last.

Trump and other white rich old men got theirs, and either believe:

a) a better world awaits them after death (home in 1950's white suburb, ad agency job, unlimited expense account, martini lunch, with 72 virgins)

b) don't care

c) all of the above

As much as I enjoy images of Trump as a backward primate, I have to question the usefulness of posts like this. Maybe they relieve some frustration in those of us who despise him for who he is and how he treats others, but beyond that I wonder what the point is. This kind of comment isn't going to change anyone's mind about him, and ultimately it just brings the poster down to his level of name-calling and mocking.

At the same time, I confess to enjoying many of Steven Colbert's sometimes hilarious monologues, which do essentially the same thing, and I also sometimes employ this tactic myself. I do think that making fun of the foibles of puffed-up people like Trump through caricature is a valid tactic that serves a legitimate purpose. But it is a fine line.

President Trump asked Attorney General William P. Barr to hold a news conference stating that no laws were broken in his call with Ukraine’s president.

Mr. Barr declined. ...

EDIT

And now, the inevitable denial ...

BBC News - Trump denies asking attorney general to clear him on Ukraine

8 Nov 2019

US President Donald Trump has denied asking the justice department to clear him of wrongdoing over a phone call with Ukraine's president that is at the heart of an impeachment inquiry.

The Washington Post  - In Virginia, newly empowered Democrats test the blue depths

November 7, 2019

  • Gun control in the home state of the National Rifle Association.

  • Passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in a legislature that used to run like an old boys’ club.

  • Climate legislation, in a state once defined by coal.

A day after winning control of the General Assembly for the first time in a generation, Virginia Democrats were making big plans to use the new power they will consolidate with Gov. Ralph Northam (D). ...

Trump offered a sound bite for the ages when he declared at a rally on the eve of the election:

If you lose, they’re gonna say Trump suffered the greatest defeat in the history of the world. You can’t let that happen to me.

The problem here is that the discourse has already reached this level - it's the new normal. Much as we'd all like politicians to take the high ground, and not resort to name-calling, the sad fact is that this is the new reality of politics in our age, even here in Godzone. Nice guys finish last.

The Washington Post - Trump ordered to pay $2 million to charities over misuse of foundation ...

November 8, 2019

President Trump has been ordered by a New York State judge to pay $2 million to a group of charities, settling a lawsuit alleging Trump misused his foundation for personal and political gain, according to a court document filed on Thursday.

The case, brought against Trump and his three eldest children by the New York State Attorney General’s office last year, alleged that the foundation had misspent funds and ignored their oversight duties under New York charity laws.

Judge Saliann Scarpulla also signed off on agreement to the shut down the Trump Foundation and began the process of dissolution last year. ...

(Trump used the charity’s money to pay private legal settlements, to buy art for one of his clubs, and to make a prohibited political donation.)

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, is doing his best to avoid having to admit that President Trump is in serious trouble.

I agree 100%. You just cannot compete with Trump on the nice-guy level because neither he or his supporters understand or respect the ways of civilized people.
