Good, understandable short discussion of impeachment. Some interesting background details too.

Jimmy Kimmel on Trump: 'Does he ever do any actual president work?'

Late-night hosts discussed the president’s favourite new fake word and his ‘rage-tweets’ aimed at the Washington Post

The Guardian

Late-night hosts addressed Donald Trump’s fury over a new report from the Washington Post and his affection for the made-up word “foistered”.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host mentioned that this week makes three years since Trump was voted into office. “It’s been smooth sailing ever since,” he joked.

Kimmel continued: “Trump plans to celebrate the anniversary tomorrow by playing golf then making love to an overcooked steak with ketchup on it.”

On three separate occasions in the last week, Trump has used the word “foistered” during rallies, a word that he appears to have invented. “It’s a combination of foisted and forced which also happens to be his two favourite ways to meet women,” Kimmel quipped.

He then moved onto a new report in the Washington Post which claims that Trump’s attorney general, Bill Barr, refused to take part in a press conference about the Ukraine call. Trump responded with a number of “rage-tweets” aimed at the paper. “Does he ever do any actual president work? Or is it all just rallies and tweets now?” Kimmel asked.

In one of the tweets, Trump criticised the media for not using fact-checkers anymore. “Donald Trump claiming the media doesn’t fact-check is like R Kelly calling Chris Brown a creep,” he joked.

A vote on impeachment might happen before Christmas although Kimmel has a better idea. “Why not do it on Christmas?” he said. “That way we can start a new tradition of rewatching it every year.”

The basis of the inquiry is Trump trying to get information that didn’t even exist in the first place. “Trump tried to pull off a heist on a casino with no money in it, like a Trump casino,” Kimmel said.

Trump Jr. defends tweeting article that alleges whistleblower identity

The View

The president’s son discussed his father’s call with Ukraine’s president, as well as his decision to tweet an article with the alleged whistleblower’s name.

Other Trump Jr. videos from same day on the view, including interview with Meghan McCain, daughter of late Senator John McCain, talking about Gold Star veterans.

President Trump had commented about dead soldiers, "he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt" and regarding John McCain "a war hero because he was captured. I prefer my war heros not captured."

Trump allies defend Trump by pointing to his incompetence

Washington Post

When President Trump has been accused of wrongdoing, his allies often defend him by pointing to his lack of knowledge or awareness on things.

kingdragonfly: Trump Jr. defends tweeting article that alleges whistleblower identity

Trump Junior truly is his father's son - an arrogant, entitled, spoiled little rich kid with a huge ego - and probably not very clever.  🙁

Trump Jr"s new book. Jr visits Arlington National war cemetery and gets emotional at the tomb of the unknown soldier:

Boston Globe: ‘‘In that moment, I also thought of all the attacks we’d already suffered as a family, and about all the sacrifices we’d have to make to help my father succeed - voluntarily giving up a huge chunk of our business and all international deals to avoid the appearance that we were ‘profiting off the office,’’’ Trump Jr. wrote.

Jr is currently trying to sell Trump Hotel Washington for a massive profit in an attempt to avoid allegations of emoluments.

And he managed to make it about themselves - just like his father.

It's so sad they had to give up a few million to make tens of millions instead. If only the mainstream media could understand how much that hurts.

When I think of the Trump sons, I am strongly reminded of the sons of Saddam Hussein. Obviously they cannot be compared in terms of brutality and crimes committed, but the same arrogance and lack of ethical values and sense of entitlement is there, and if there were no limits placed on them, I suspect they would behave much the same.

The New York Times - In Seeking to Join Suit Over Subpoena Power, Mulvaney Goes Up Against the President

Nov. 10, 2019

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Even in a White House of never-befores, this may be one of the more head-spinning: The president’s chief of staff is trying to join a lawsuit against the president.

Mick Mulvaney works only about 50 steps from the Oval Office as he runs the White House staff but rather than simply obey President Trump’s order to not cooperate with House impeachment investigators, he sent his lawyers to court late Friday night asking a judge whether he should or not.

To obtain such a ruling, the lawyers asked to join a lawsuit already filed by a former White House official - a lawsuit that names “the Honorable Donald J. Trump” as a defendant along with congressional leaders. ...

In effect, Mr. Mulvaney hopes the court will tell him whether to listen to his own boss, who wants him to remain silent, or to comply with a subpoena from the House, which wants his testimony. ...

Regarding Mulvaney joining a lawsuit against the president, it's a "cover your ass" move.

I'd call it more of a devious than clever move, and sure to make Trump even more paranoid if possible

Mulvaney can't be charged with being held in contempt, and more importantly, gives him some breathing space.

For someone with their feet being held in the fire, it's a win-win situation.

This excellent opinion piece is well worth reading, even if it is a little off-topic.

Too long to quote, but the summary is Democrats are on a positive roll, with a clear plan ahead, and the Republicans are flailing.

The Democrats may surprise us on impeachment

Washington Post

..."Perhaps we are underestimating the Democrats."...

..."Would it be easier if witnesses such as acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and John Bolton performed their civic obligation and testified, as have the raft of patriotic Americans who have already come forward? Sure. But one cannot rely on Republicans developing a conscience and a spine at this late date.

You go to trial with the evidence you have, and right now the evidence of Trump’s solicitation of a bribe, extortion of an ally, obstruction of Congress and witness intimidation is overwhelming."
