The Washington Post - Over the weekend
A recently-indicted Ukrainian-born American who helped Giuliani look for dirt on Democrats says he wants to testify to Congress about those efforts.
And he implicates a powerful Republican lawmaker.
Lev Parnas, through a lawyer, says the top Republican on the House Intelligence committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), was helping them search for wrongdoing by former vice president Joe Biden in Ukraine.
Parnas is charged with campaign finance violations related to his efforts to sway U.S. policy toward Ukraine.
So he certainly has reason to try to offer information to Congress that might help alleviate his legal trouble.
His claim would be a big deal if true, putting a member of Congress who plays a major role in the investigation into Trump as a part of the episode Trump is being impeached over. ...

None so deaf as those who will not hear.
'Ask not what you can do for your country: ask what you can do for me'. Donald J.Trump. US President 2016 - 2020.
The New York Times - House Judiciary Panel Asks Trump if He Will Present Impeachment Defense
Nov. 30, 2019
WASHINGTON — The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee asked President Trump on Friday whether he intends to mount a defense during the committee’s consideration of impeachment articles, setting a deadline of next Friday for Mr. Trump and his lawyers to decide if they will present evidence or call witnesses.
In a letter to the president, Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York and the committee chairman, said Mr. Trump has the right to review the evidence against him, ask questions of his accusers during public hearings that begin next week and present evidence and request witness testimony.
“Please provide the committee with notice of whether your counsel intends to participate, specifying which of the privileges your counsel seeks to exercise,” Mr. Nadler wrote.
He said the deadline for responding is 5 p.m. on Dec. 6. ...
The Washington Post - Trump heads to NATO summit and Britain braces for impact
We’re now used to the hand-wringing that accompanies President Trump’s trips to international summits.
Whether at meetings of the United Nations, the Group of 20, the Group of Seven or - as is the case this week in London - the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Trump seems to bring with him a cloud of anxiety.
The venerable military alliance is marking its 70th anniversary this year, but Trump’s notoriously transactional worldview has deepened questions about its future.
More broadly, his stated skepticism about U.S. security commitments to Europe, curiously friendly disposition to Russia’s autocratic ruler, indifference to multilateral diplomacy and apathy about human rights and the rule of law abroad have all been widely interpreted as signs of the Western liberal order fraying under his watch.
But when the two-day confab of NATO leaders kicks off Tuesday, Trump won’t be the only polarizing figure in attendance. ...
- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an illiberal demagogue reviled by many in the European establishment ...
- French President Emmanuel Macron, who provocatively declared in an interview last month that Europeans are experiencing “the brain death of NATO” ...
The Washington Post - Nadler calls Trump’s bluff
Dec. 3, 2019 (extracts from an opinion piece)
When the House Intelligence Committee held depositions of key witnesses, President Trump’s lawyers cried: “Unfair! Secret hearings!”
In fact, a slew of Republicans had the right to ask questions, though some chose not to attend.
When the hearings moved to a public phase, the White House hollered: “Unfair! Trump’s lawyer isn’t present!”
When the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), invited Trump’s lawyers to attend, the response was: “Unfair! We’re not coming!”
What is unfair is that Trump and his lawyers have given up any semblance of fidelity to facts, have smeared distinguished witnesses, attempted to intimidate the whistleblower (and put his or her safety in jeopardy), hurled baseless accusations at House Democrats investigating presidential wrongdoing and, worst of all, obstructed Congress by refusing to produce documents and blocking critical witnesses from testifying.
On Sunday, Pat A. Cipollone, the White House counsel, sent Nadler a letter declining to show up for the Wednesday hearing but reserving the right to participate later on. ...
There is no mystery as to what is going on here.
Trump has no facts to put forth and no valid constitutional argument that bribery (specifically mentioned in the Constitution) and obstruction fail to meet the standard for impeachment. ...
Instead, Trump plays the same card that every corrupt authoritarian does in these situations: He attacks the investigators as corrupt and unfair. ...
This is an interesting read. An interview with Lisa Page, who was target and demonised by Trump when the Mueller probe was in full swing, and is still referenced by him when he feels the need to lash out.
Once again it has me wondering how many decades it will take the US to recover from Trump, and the damage he and his Republican enablers are doing to their long standing non-partisan institutions.
