The Washington Post - 5 takeaways from the House Judiciary impeachment hearing

today

headings ...

1. Democrats are using Giuliani to push back on timeline critiques

Democrats appear to recognize that the timeline is a point of contention, so they are starting to talk more about why they are in a rush.
What they say is, essentially: Yes, we’re moving fast, but it’s because we have to.
Trump asked a foreign government to interfere in our election by investigating Democrats, and that election is less than a year away.

2. Democrats are arguing that the case against Trump is unassailable - even without top witnesses ...

3. Republicans are relying less on substance than process ...

4. The GOP engaged in a lot of interruptions ...

5. Republicans want to talk about Joe Biden much more than Trump ...

It just gets weirder and weirder. According to this WP item, Christopher Steele of Steele dossier fame (remember that?) turns out to have had a 'personal' relationship with Trump's hot daughter Ivanka! Can this get any more twisted?

Yeah, and Trump was so impressed with him that he offered Steele a job. This totally discredits Trump's attack on the Steele dossier as being a hit job by a partisan political rival.

“It is not what the 'Department of Justice' does”: Barr and Durham go rogue on the Inspector General’s report

Why did the attorney general and his handpicked prosecutor undermine the findings of his own investigation?

Vanity Fair, By Abigail Tracy

As expected, the top line of Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s review of the origins of the FBI investigation into potential conspiracy between Russia and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign tended to exonerate the FBI—investigators found “no documentary or testimonial evidence” that FBI officials were driven by political bias against Trump when they opened the probe, known as “Crossfire Hurricane,” in July 2016.

And, also as expected, Trump's night-is-day spin began immediately. “It’s a disgrace what’s happened with the things that were done to our country.... It’s incredible, far worse than what I ever thought possible,” Trump declared at the White House, focusing his criticisms on the findings related to Carter Page, a former adviser to Trump. “They fabricated evidence and they lied to the courts.”

But what was truly surprising to some veterans of the FBI was the reaction from Attorney General William Barr and U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham, who Barr tapped to run a parallel investigation of Crossfire Hurricane and related investigations.

Both issued statements throwing significant shade at Horowitz's report, though, technically, Barr is Horowitz's boss. “I’ve never seen such an internal 'Department of Justice' effort to challenge and undermine the Inspector General's findings,” Harry Litman, a former U.S. attorney, told me Monday. “It is not what the Department of Justice does.”

Trump speaking to mostly an mostly Jewish audience at the Israeli American Council in Hollywood, Florida, on Saturday night:

“A lot of you are in the real estate business, because I know you very well. You’re brutal killers, not nice people at all.

But you have to vote for me—you have no choice. You’re not gonna vote for Pocahontas (his derogatory name for Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren), I can tell you that.

You’re not gonna vote for the wealth tax. Yeah, let’s take 100% of your wealth away!

Some of you don’t like me. Some of you I don’t like at all, actually.

And you’re going to be my biggest supporters because you’re going to be out of business in about 15 minutes if they get it. So I don’t have to spend a lot of time on that.”

I'm sure that his Hollywood audience was immediately won over by the President's eloquent and persuasive oratory.  🙁

The New York Times - Donald Trump Is Bad for the Jews

Dec. 9, 2019

On Saturday Donald Trump gave a speech to the Israeli American Council in which he asserted that many in his audience were “not nice people at all,” but that “you have to vote for me” because Democrats would raise their taxes. ...

You might expect American Jews, who are in fact considerably more affluent than the average, to lean right. But they don’t.

In fact, only 17 percent of them voted Republican last year. ...

The Trump administration is, beyond any reasonable doubt, an anti-democratic, white nationalist regime. And while it is not (yet) explicitly anti-Semitic, many of its allies are ...

It takes, well, chutzpah, a truly striking level of contempt for your audience, to foment hatred-laced identity politics, then turn to members of minority groups and say, in effect, “Ignore the bigotry and look at the taxes you’re saving!” ...

BBC News - What exactly is Mr Trump accused of?

today

Trump is alleged to have committed "high crimes and misdemeanours" (a phrase from the US Constitution) on two counts outlined by Mr Nadler:

  1. The first allegation is that he exercised the powers of his public office to "obtain an improper personal benefit while ignoring or injuring the national interest", by allegedly putting pressure on Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 presidential election

  2. The second allegation is that "when he was caught, when the House investigated and opened an impeachment inquiry, President Trump engaged in unprecedented categorical and indiscriminate defiance of the impeachment inquiry", thereby obstructing Congress

The charges are set out in detail in a Judiciary Committee document.

Trump is such a showman, and an idiot.

In the US Senate 53% are Republican. The Constitution requires a two-thirds super majority to convict Trump, impeached.

Mitchell McConnell Jr, the Kentucky's senior United States senator that looks like a turtle, is the Senate Majority Leader. He wants a quick 10 day trial, to minimize the damage to the GOP.

However Trump wants a show trial with lots of time and lots of witnesses.

Guess which one of these sleazebags has a better grasp of the consequences of a long trial: the paleolithic Southern Senator or the egomaniacal addled reality show celebrity / failed businessman.

I can just see Trump now crying out about his OWN testimony being "Fake News" as he is steered into telling the truth.

From NASA's latest rocket with its big phallic shape and its orange color, I got ask:

Did Trump ask for this, and is Trump over compensating for some deficiency?
