My thoughts are with those people in Barcelona and the families of those affected in yet another mindless act of what appears to be terrorism.

What a sad and wasted world we have made.

Some bloke from Liverpool, John somethingorother, wondered the same thing.  Wrote a song about it in 1971.  Nothing has really improved (and things are arguably worse) in the last 46 years.

I have spent many very pleasurable hours on the Ramblas. It has a unique and happy atmosphere, just people at ease promenading and enjoying themselves. I hope that isn't gone forever.

To paraphrase:

“Not until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned and that there are no longer 1st class and 2nd class citizens of any nation and until basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race”

Is there an agreed definition of terrorism that makes these stats meaningful?

(Genuine question, I'm not being skeptical.)

Probably not - but I don't doubt that "we" (in the west) tend to sensationalise attacks close to home and largely ignore atrocities elsewhere.

Here's a better chart detailing terror attacks in Europe over the past few decades:

I do not ignore atrocities elsewhere, but our media certainly do place a distorted emphasis on those that occur closer to home. I don't know how to change that.

It's not just the (mainstream) media - for every incident, there seems to be a new thread - even on this (mainly geek) forum.  That's what they (the terrorists) want.

Oh - and especially they want a POTUS insulting Islam.

Just coincidentally - Spain is literally as far from "home" (NZ) as any place could possibly be - unless we colonise outer space.

But of course it's "culturally close" - thus our reaction exposes our (possibly unconscious) strong cultural bias.

No doubt, but when the TV was filled with images of Syrian men holding their dead children every night I wept with them though I have never been to Syria. I have been to Barcelona.

I have to admit, I feel that I have seen more than enough atrocities over the past few years to last me a lifetime. Some a little too close to home.
