As each day goes by and we get closer to our election the amount of opinion pieces in online media and news papers increase ten fold. My question is are these opinions helpful for the undecided voter? We have previous politicians taking swipes at current politicians and to me it just seems over the top.

Well known journalists have the ability to sway a voters choice based on their opinion which just seems wrong, should there be an update to election laws forbidding the publishing of opinions and only allowing for real facts or does that seem draconian?

My concern is if someone is voting for the first time and they are reading the opinion of some radio DJ or news reader who has a mis guided opinion they are potentially not voting for the party that best suits them.

Long story short people are like sheep and the amount of opinions a lot which seem one sided are going to create an uninformed choice.

 I agree,

Not just on the election. Opinion articles seem to be the mainstay of newspapers these days and are always left focused and very unbalanced.

I think any kind of legislation about this would be a slippery slope. It would be difficult to the point of impossibility to make a legal distinction between opinion and fact. Maybe consequences could be attached to the publication of obviously false 'facts', but even that would be difficult. I think at some point voters just have to take responsibility for ensuring the credibility of the opinions they listen to. Otherwise they have no business being voters.

wow, this thread scares me on so many levels but mostly (1) the wish to control opinions, (2) that believing in certain opinions somehow makes you unworthy to vote.

I like reading them because I like seeing how other people reason stuff out. They come at ideas from angles I don't think of.
