Ha. Fat chance he wasn't.

It's not a role I'd want, aside from the money. If your ego demands recognition, feeding it with second place in a position which no one will remember in 5 years hardly cuts the mustard..
I'd head to the Foreign Minister's chair myself. More free travel opportunities.
Winston would probably prefer a new position, Minister for Winston Peters, in the new Department of Winston Peters....

You voted for National, so why bag Peters? You want him on board so that Bill is PM

Just got an alert while typing, Paula Bennett says National wants to talk to the Greens. Must be desperate to want to sell them out than get NZF seats.

Is that a serious overture to them or just another negotiating/PR tactic. E.G Reminding Peters that if they would have the numbers with either him or the Green Party. Also by making the Green Party say no they get to say to the public they tried but the mean old Greens wouldn't return their call.

Could be either. Pressure on Peters, making him not the kingmaker, but if they did ask Greens and Greens said no, they are in a bad place. Another negative from National to NZF to add to the recent others, i.e. just a maverick. Its another example where Labour/Greens/NZF would be far less hassle and more workable. I dont rate Greens vs NZF as a major issue now, they both want to have influence, and both getting into Govt does just that. National isnt giving Peters the space he asked for, which is just 2 weeks to get specials counted.

I thought that this was a pretty well reasoned analysis of just what Winston might be thinking.

I voted National because I wanted National on board, not because I wanted Winston Peters on board. If I wanted Winston Peters on board, I would have voted for his party instead....

I would be quite happy to see National as a strong opposition than bow to Winston. I think the Opposition with all three lessor parties would only last a few months. Too many cooks....and Jacinda hasnt the strength or experience to manage it all.

Although if you read that  blog post referenced above, it suggests the truly terrifying idea of Winston becoming PM. Imagine Jacinda accepting the Deputy role under the tutelage of a master politician like Winston...he get his ego trip, a line in the history books and his K and she gets 3 years government experience and steps into the top job for the next election when WP retires unbeaten...!

Won't Labour have to get sign off from the Unions for anything to do with Winston? Unions have a huge say in the Labour party unless something happens during an election campaign like resignation of Little.

When he said he wasn't interested in DPM, that's a clear statement (in my Winston Peters mind) that he wants to be PM.

Perhaps some smart dude will offer him the title of puppet PM for 12 months.

I prefer National with Winston. National without any motivation is saving money, look at our surpluses, but sorry about 9 years of deferring

An extreme over analysis of what has happened every MMP election. A Coalition/agreement. Nothing has changed apart from media frenzy.

This isn't the 70's. Hence why both parties are centre, one a bit left one a bit right
