This Winston thing is an over reaction. No party has a mandate. MMP allows that to proceed once all parties negotiate. Bill rung Winston Sunday, no answer and all of a sudden thats a denied call? Peters isn't an 18yo, he, like me, doesnt live on his phone, too much conspiracy here. His plans are well documented. NO negotiations s till Oct 7. So he arrives in Welly, reporters galore to ask what will he talk about today to both leaders? We already know. Preliminaries over protocol and such like. The media are the bees around the honeypot.

At the end of this process I see a Labour/NZ Green/NZF coalition. I cannot see NZF joining National, just too much bad history. NZ Green campaigned for a change of government and I believe they will stay true to that campaign. I believe there will be a new election by early 2019 when the Labour/NZ Green/NZF coalition falls apart.

Why would it fall apart? On the negative side, its three parties jockeying for position, on the positive side they just get on with it. If your 2019 prediction came true, Ill buy two or three houses, easy.

NZF does not have a good track record and does not play well. Green/Labour cannot survive alone if NZF leaves a coalition. The mix of Labour/NZF/NZ Green is a marriage from the devils altar and I believe it will come asunder well before the scheduled 2020 election time frame.

Wow, thats harsh! :-)

They all have one thing in common. They all want to push their policies. Thats fine. They wont agree on everything but they can agree on some things and compromise on others. They all know if they play silly buggers, its Opposition for at least 9 more years. So, I think they will make a go of it. I can see more issues with National/NZF, lots of issues to make the news there

I guess it comes down to what parties want to make a difference. And what party wants to hold the reins again. Bring a traditional National voter, I want change, but I am also more than happy that Peters will take them to account if it goes that way. Maori and UF were weak, they were just paid for seats. Thats not democracy.

Winston has already indicated that 2017 was his last election. He does not care if NZF is in the opposition benches after the next election.

NZF has been around for 24 years as a political party, and for 21 of those years they've been in parliament. They've even been in government for part of that time, and that's a pretty good record for a minor party. As for your 'take' on a labour/greens/NZF coalition, you're entitled to your opinion, but I think you're wrong, and that's my opinion.

I'm not too sure. Anybody that has real ownership of an "idea", "concept", "belief" is unlikely to want to leave it in bad hands. I understand that some business owners are quite happy to pass a business on without regard for its future. But it is my understanding that many small business owners, especially those who have slogged long and hard to make it work, would rather see it passed on in a healthy, well established state. Legacy. Many politicians are no different.

I do not particularly like Winston, but I think he deserves a little more credit.

Winston is a about Winston. New Zealand first is the vehicle that facilitates the all about Winston. He has said that this was his last election so he will no longer want the vehicle but of course will look for a new one, possibly the Vice Regal vehicle.

Regarding what would winston do -

Apparently he spent all of 28 minutes bumming the National Party in the morning, and spent all afternoon with Labour.

Apparently? From what I read BE and JA were happy. Do you know what they discussed? It was nit a negotiation it was formulating the upcoming negotiation process.

Do you have  link for the bumming article?

With National losing two seats Labour et al can claim there is a mandate for change. A Labour/NZGreen/NZ First coalition is the likely outcome but still not guaranteed.

Not a mandate for change, a golden sceptre to King Winston who will now have absolute leverage to play both sides to the max. With a one seat majority National had more control over the negotiations and he waited for this moment where he is now the king of the castle.

Yes it is a mandate for change. The majority of voters didn't vote for National. And the majority of seats in the house are not national party seats.
