Why does Labours reducing immigration policy include students? They are temporary. They bring fees, BIG fees.

You tell us?

Also tell us how we are going to double the building programme for new houses with so many less immigrants?

Remember our unemployment rate is as low as it can go in reality.

When Jacinda gets asked this question she just smiles and shows her teeth and says we are going to train kiwis to do it....what kiwis?

Jacinda also dances around when she does press conferences. I'm sure that will change over time.

The focus is on skilled workers, not just allowing anyone and everyone in. There are few countries where anyone can just emigrate to, because they just decide to. The reduced immigration is not Peters 10,000 level, I believe it is more Labours level. If we were short for skilled workers, no doubt they will be brought in. Drive through attendants for Macca's.no. Nothing is set in stone.

A lot of those students are doing *** low value courses through "institutions" just so they can get their foot in the door.

Allow that, but the foot in the door is now a new issue. We get millions on foreign money imported for education, we should protect that.

We don't need money for education, it's going to be free. No only the courses become free, but you get paid more to drink and party during your free courses.

You miss the point. Im not talking about Kiwi education, I'm taking about foreign exchange earnings brought in by foreign students. They pay 5 figures per semester. Its a big industry.

Relevant? JK, like any good politician will give you a 5 minute answer and actually pass on nothing.

End of the day its either neoliberalism, where the market will manage everything. If anyone jumps up and down we may do a bit more. or interventionalist, where intervention is needed to control things. A small country is very exposed. Or its the other party got in this time, I will oppose for the sake of opposing. I am sure if there was a strong indicator of good progress by this new Govt in any particular area, it will be marginalised. Id rather stay open minded and see what happens. If Nats were chosen, Peters would be in their back to make some changes. As gets stated occasionally, the policies are blurred, they are not that radically different although some will be.

Geektastic:

Some evidence that they were 'running the place into the ground please.

The main 2 planks of nationals rock star economy in hindsight were more cows and more people from immigration.

More cows has lead to large scale pollution of our rivers.

http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/environment/environmental-reporting-series/environmental-indicators/Home/Fresh%20water/river-water-quality-nitrogen.aspx

Look at table 1 and see how dissolved nitrogen has increased under a national government.

More people from migration looked like it was a silver bullet for national. People were loving the demand for housing and consumer goods. But we forgot those people get sick and go to hospital, have kids who go to school and  make other demands on government services.

https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/health/96182639/the-hospital-is-full-sign-warns-of-eighthour-waits-at-middlemore-hospital

Our local school has been teaching kids in their hall for 5 years waiting for the M.ed to pull finger and allocate funds to build more classrooms. No link provided for this anecdote.

There's few cops per person under national.

http://i.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/83008493/Analysis-Police-numbers-in-the-political-crossfire

National have been banking tax revenue and deferring expenditure. They claimed they were being sensible but were just running NZ into the ground.

Bills claim he has left NZ in great shape is not very true (not sure of MF's requirements with legalities so I won't descend into 'pants on fire' etc. etc.)

Sad you call people out like that.

He is actually correct. When education was free it was party central at university..especially the first year. Students will be students. They seem to party had as it is now and they pay for education. I am totally against this policy as is most of the western world.

They already get huge interest free loans and usually get higher salaries almost immediately or go work over seas. Maybe they should get their fees refunded gradually as they work..ie after they have completed their degrees.

We have people living in poverty and on the streets who cannot afford a beer let alone parties every weekend.

Not sure what is sad about it. The comment was foolish and I pointed that out. I stand by what I said. It is a foolish thing to say.

If you are going to ridicule someones post you need to counter their argument so we can see what you are on about. Just calling someones comments as foolish on their own is indeed foolish.

Using what "most of the Western world" may do as a determinant on our NZ policy stifles innovation.  The rest of the Western world seems to be plagued with problems, many of which seem to be linked to inequality of opportunity / access to quality education.

Note that the free first year doesn't just apply to university fees, but polytech and trade apprenticeships.

IIRC WP was claiming that they'd specifically target training for careers where there are skill shortages currently being filled by immigrants.

The detail of how they'll do that will be interesting. I hear that there are already numerous scholarships available and not taken up - suggesting to me that money isn't the sole barrier to enrolment.

It seems pretty self-evident to me, but okay, the poster said (quote): 'you get paid more to drink and party during your free courses.'

I think that is a foolish comment to make. I also think it is silly and untrue. Is that really what Labour's policy will achieve? Is it the intention? Free tuition and more money to drink and party? Maybe the poster should substantiate that claim first. If so, I will look for evidence to counter it.

Patently untrue.

Go to germany (amongst other places) and enjoy free tuition.

Their economy seems to do ok with that policy.
