Would you prefer a senior experienced statesman who can follow due process or someone who wants to settle it all privately on the golf course with his 'mates' ?

so, no comment on suitability or otherwise of Dr Cullen, just an attempt to be derogatory?

do you want to discuss politics or have a slanging match?

You invented "someone who wants to settle it all privately on the golf course with his 'mates'" out of nowhere, I think you should probably ask yourself that question.

But I'll bite:

A bit like the labour relations policies Labour's 'mates' in the Union movement bought and paid for?

A bit like the zealous fumbling of Charter Schools that Labour's 'mates' in the Teachers Union bought and paid for?

But of course, it's only corrupt when it's someone you don't like who does it.

I'm actually pretty outcomes focused. I don't really care how the final recommendation is reached, a good outcome is they would reach a fair and equitable tax policy recommendation that is good for all NZ.

Political bias affects outcomes. Golfing ability probably won't in this situation. You choose.

Speaking of golf... I hope Mr Ric Kanye's submission on the Overseas Investment bill won't influence the government, seeing as there's no place for golf in the is government.

A billionaire American investor and New Zealand resident, who developed one of the world's best golf courses here, has threatened not to expand if the Government's anti-foreign buyer ban is passed.

NZ doesn't need foreign investment. If we need more money just tax the rich..... Until they leave.

Remember, under the last Labour Government, if you earned over $60K, the tax system considered you 'rich'.

Me too.  But I'm certainly not holding my breath for a fair and equitable tax system.

In my mind, that would be one where:

1) Everyone pays the same amount of tax on every dollar they earn.  (You earn ten times a much as I do, you pay ten times as much tax.  Companies, Trusts, Individuals, all the same)

2) Everyone pays the same amount of GST on every product/service purchased.  (No exemptions for lobbyists to exploit)   <- we're pretty darn good in this respect already!

3) Everyone pays the same amount of CGT on the realisation of capital gain.  (No exemptions for family homes, shares, or anything else)   <- this could easily be wrapped into 1) by requiring all Capital Gains to be declared as taxable income.

Simple, fair, equitable.

The only arguments then would be "how much" does the govt need to meet it's budgeted expenses, and what should the split be set at for "income" tax and GST.

(Eg.  Is it 20% income tax and 10% GST or 17% income tax and 15% GST?  etc.)

But I accept that that is probably mere fantasy at this point...

You are obviously trying to start something by using silly terms like "settle it all privately the golf course", then you try and act all innocent when you get called on it. Also "echo chamberees"

Labour have done shady deals on charter schools as well. Don't even get me started on the honesty of their policies during the campaign. If they had been honest about what they would actually do, they wouldn't be in the Beehive at all.

I am not a tax expert, but these seems kind of tough. The only fair way would then be allowing you to claim tax back on a house purchase, surely, if it's your primary home.

Example. I Buy a house for my family, I live in it for 10 years, till we outgrow it, and we need a bigger house. We make 200K on the sale, and have to shell between 20K and 40K in tax, then we buy a MORE expensive house. Either family home with a 5 Year minimum period is excluded.

I assume then also, that if I buy a bach for $150K and then sell it for 125K because the market is turned down, I can CLAIM tax on that difference?

Why do you believe that you should not pay tax on the 200k that you made from the sale of your home?

Back onto the Topic of "Jacinda Ardern - our new PM"

Mike Hosking is not impressed

This is a pretty damning summation.

Egads, that is really poor.

Kelvin Davis is a fool. It shows a complete lack of understanding and leadership on JA's part that under ANY circumstances he would be allowed to speak on behalf of Labour whilst literally anyone else is available. JA clearly didn't learn from the last 2 times he was left to his own devices and made Labour look incompetent. She is obviously too busy managing Vogue covers to worry about such things.

What is even worse, is that KD knew nothing last time he was questioned and had to be handed paper from down the benches on how to answer questions in Parliment, but in the meantime hasn't bothered to brush up on even the broad strokes of their key policies.

I don't like WP, but I would say that even though I strongly disagree with a lot of the policies he produces or supports, he knows enough about each one to hold a conversation with at varying levels of depth.

Why do you believe that you should not pay tax on the 200k that you made from the sale of your home?

Because it's the family home. I didn't buy it to profit from, and I still likely need to buy in the same market. It's fair if you allow a tax deduction for the output tax too. it's fair if I can tax deduct the money I spent perhaps increasing it's value by renovating it etc. What about my time? If I spent 10 weekends doing landscaping and as a result my sale price goes up 50K, can I claim that? Why not?

What do you propose a fair CGT is? 5%, 15%?

Why not? Because your own time is your own. You haven't incurred a cost without an invoice, and if you are going to claim it and invoice for it then it would also be income to you as well.
