I did find it more than a little ironic that they were extolling the 18 houses "built" under the Kiwibuild program, but then admitted they weren't "built" they were "bought" and rebranded. When I pointed this out, their comment was "don't get too caught up in the details".

You're right.  We should nip this in the bud before it gets repeated so often that people simply accept it as truth...

The 18 homes that Twyford attended the opening of were *not* Kiwibuild homes.  They were builds commissioned by Housing New Zealand a year and a half ago - a deal done and paid for long before "KiwiBuild" even became a thing...

They are part of the McLennan development and sit on land formerly owned by the Defence Force between Takanini and Papakura.

See this story on the development from 2016

I would like to see more details of why the decision was made before judgement is cast. Having said that I don't like any connection like this with the US, generally too many strings attached and I don't like NZ being associated with anything Clinton related.

I would be interested to know why Jacinda has decided that donating $5.5m to the Clinton Foundation over the next year is more important than delivering on their election promise to reduce Doctor's visits by $10 from July 1st.

I'd like to say that defies belief, but I think more accurately I'd have to say it defies logic.

They may be doing good work but a big part of the purpose is to big up the Clinton family influence. It was a dumb move from the previous govt and it is a dumb move from this one. Nothing particular against the Clintons from me I'd feel the same if it was Obama foundation Trump foundation etc.

I'd feel somewhat worse (understatement) if it was The Trump Foundation:

rjt123: Certainly tragic. But is there no other benefits or government assistance for a scenario like that? Surely the household is entitled to more that just paid parental leave...?

Why?

To determine that you would need a lot more information about the total picture, and it's unlikely (fairly enough) that it would become public knowledge.

As someone whos' wife nearly died in childbirth, I fully sympathize with this person. We were fortunate that my wife was in a hospital. Had she of had a home birth (something I would *never* recommend) I would certainly be a single dad now and my daughter would never have been born.

No matter what system you set up, there will always be tragedy and extreme cases that get through the cracks. Ultimately, it's about making sure that it's known that fringe cases have fix, by way of one off payments or a special entitlement and making sure that knowledge is held by enough key people in situations like this.

Reminds me of a story my mother told me of when she used to live in Rhodesia.

It was the "in thing" amongst the locals to have your baby in the hospital like the white women. So what used to happen was that the local women would wait in the grounds of the hospital until almost ready to drop and stagger in to the hospital, give birth on the floor and return home saying that they had given birth "in hospital" and  glowing in applause all round..!

This would be about 1962 or so.

I wasn't aware National had done it, and had I of known, I would have thought it a bad move.

I'd have more issue with the association of the Clinton foundation than the Obama one. I liked President Clinton, I thought he was a pretty decent president, but his charity has been mired in scandals for years. It's not a good look.

Agree. NBR story covering the donation by the previous govt:

https://www.nbr.co.nz/article/taxpayers-will-continue-funding-clinton-foundation’s-flagship-jw-p-194939

The conspiracists will call this NZ gives money to Clinton, but imo it's very likely these are genuine development programs, but all the same the secondary purpose is to big up the Clintons and create more influence. It's a really bad look for any government to be a party to that.

rjt123: While Hosking is generally good for a laugh, and normally on the right wavelength, he has a habit of twisting facts or logic to suit his case.

But in this instance he actually hits the nail on the head: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12046514

Just another train wreck waiting to happen.

I'd have to agree that he sounds fairly correct in that article.

I would also agree that this is a train wreck already happening - just slowly. I heard on the radio today that the teachers want a 16% pay rise.

All I can say is: wage-push inflation and/or higher taxes here we come....

900M !!!! Seriously?

Simon Bridges -

"It's very hard to justify it. I don't think New Zealanders will accept significant new money for Foreign Affairs and foreign aid when you are not meeting a core promise you made to New Zealanders about cheaper GP visits for hard-working New Zealanders from 1 July."

CORRECT!

Wow, Thanks for giving away our money to the Pacific.

No wonder the thieves are charging import tax of gifts.

This is a frustrating development, especially given the scaling back of Kiwibuild and the other major priorities we heard so much about in the lead-up to the election.

Not hard to see why Winston picked Labour now, is it?

Oh right, he felt it was in the best interests of Kiwi's.

There is a Tui ad right there.

I wonder if Tui would let me pay for an ad and put that up somewhere.

I still can't get my head around 900M.

Yes, it's quite apparent how much those relationships have been suffering as a result of the 900M they didn't have over the last 4 years.
