I am disgusted by our  Coalition failing to make a public statement condemning Trump's administration's policy of separating families.

I think it is not so much the coalition but more a Winston Peters attitude. Kelvin Davis has spoken out against it.

A Winston peters attitude is a government attitude. WP holds all the cards, nobody else in government. All the other puppets have to just suck it up and play along.

You really don't understand how Government works do you.

When any Minister speaks to the media he is speaking to NZ on behalf of the Government. Sometime they can get away with it by saying up front "this is my personal view" or "this is not a government view".

To say after the event that it was a personal view is just utter lying.

I agree.  The minister is always a minister and should speak accordingly.

I look at it this way.  If a Minister says/does something offensive in private capacity, they are not professionally protected by way of their actions being private.  Why should inoffensive (if controversial) comments be under any less scrutiny.

It's not that unreasonable.  Many private sector employees can lose their jobs for unbecoming conduct outside of their workplace on their own time.

I predict it to be named something designed to elicit a positive response from her followers.

The previous NZ government would have been even less likely to do so.

I agree a public condemnation would be a good thing in many circumstances. Having said that, it is a very big thing to do for any government to issue a specific statement condemning the policy of another government. I think only Mexico has done exact that in practice. France came close.

That said I do believe that Peters could have handled this a lot better in practice. Referring to this as an 'internal matter' for the USA was a very bad choice of language to use. Contrast that to Bridges who made a much better statement than anyone in the government, and in language that would have been perfectly appropriate for Peters to use, and could have been stronger.

It's an option, I'll give you that.

Now that the staffing cap on the public service is lifted watch it blow out.

Clearly this government is so focused on helping the less advantaged people they are falling over themselves.

A number of the key departments and agencies are understaffed. Cannot help folks if you don't have the resources to do so.

Dishonest Labour trying to sneak this in whilst everyone (some) are distracted by Labours Labour.

Such dishonesty and poor ethics.
