Related, who pays for her hubby to go with her as he has done various times? Rare to see that for past PM's

I agree with this. He should be paying out of his own money... Oh wait...

I questioned that too. But as it happens the 757 has to be flitting around anyway as it cant stay in Nauru as no room, so it would flit off to Marshall Islands for something to do then go back anyway, so cost wise it doesnt really make any difference. I dunno why they have a passenger jet for this stuff, should get a Learjet. You dont hire a bus to drive to town, you hire a car

I've never been on one of these trips so I am just guessing that more people go than just the PM. There will be all sorts of MFAT and support staff and even press might hitch a lift.

If you already own a bus, why hire a car?

@tdgeek  Gotcha.  Thanks for clarifying :-)

per GV27's comment...  It's a National Party issue because it was National Party information that was leaked.  However it hasn't yet been established that "these are actually not leading the country.  (Leaker)"

So far the only "evidence" to suggest that the leaker is in the National caucus is the leaker's say so.  I'm keeping an open mind about it at this stage.

The leaker revealed inner details of national caucus meetings and further more was able to satisfy the police of his/her place in the national party. Thats why the police investigation was halted.

The real shame is that this person cannot uncover themselves to get the mental health help they need.

I reckon it's collins - she seems  nuts ! ;-)

This event seemed to have a pretty small party. Certainly if there were a good number and support staff, the "bus" makes more sense

The leaker did reveal details of national caucus meetings.  But these details are not exclusively known to National Caucus members.  Many Parliamentary staffers are also privy to that information.

As far as I know, the leaker did not "satisfy the police of his/her place in the national party" (perhaps you can provide a source supporting that claim?)

In fact, the Police have identified the leaker.  They know for sure whether or not the leaker is a member of National's caucus or not.  But they are not releasing the information on privacy grounds.  That is why the police investigation was halted.

The current beat up about the PM using an RNZAF Boeing to go to the South Pacific Forum meeting in Nauru is pathetic. There is no additional cost involved in operating the aircraft as VIP flying in support of the government is built into the Defence budget. Peters is doing a good job at the meeting but the PM attending, and getting there using our own resources, sends a message that we take the region seriously. She could hardly get there on her pushbike (complete with basket) could she?

Too bad that she couldn’t also manage to arrange a quick detour of the aircraft to help out that other kiwi Mum who is dying in Bali...

The optics are extremely poor on this matter. “Beat up” or otherwise...

If she didn't have a newborn then she could go with the rest of them at a much lower cost. Aussie PM is not going, no real need to go, if you think it's going to make one ioata of difference except for some photo opportunities then you are kidding yourself.

The whole Bali episode is ridiculous. The government has no obligation to sort that, and no citizen should expect it. Free healthcare extends to our borders beyond that and you leave at your own risk.

Sure, it's tough for the family, and I'd hate to be in that situation, but there is a limit to what the government can do. Or every Tom, dick or Harry will be expecting 'all-expenses-paid' air ambulance flights from around the globe.

She needs to be gone. The PM needs to get a spine and sack her. Should have happened the first time.

Agreed. Simon Bridges suggesting he would have done differently is nonsense.

Nevertheless, it's nice to see that he has been able to help facilitate her repatriation.

Anonymous benefactors have paid the bill of about $170,000 so Hamilton woman Abby Hartley can be flown back to New Zealand from Bali, where she is in a coma.

National Party leader Simon Bridges said the New Zealanders who paid the invoice for the medical evacuation had approached him in the middle of last week, wanting to help. He contacted Hartley's husband Richard and, during several conversations, was able to facilitate the payment.

"It's a big thing they've done." Bridges said. "What this does, it gives the confidence money isn't going to be the limiting factor in Abby and Richard Hartley getting back."

Hartley's family has also raised $237,602 through a Givealittle page. Bridges said any of that Givealittle money left over would be used to reimburse those people who paid for the medical evacuation.

There was some uncertainty around Givealittle donations, and it took time to collect, Bridges said. Hartley would also be facing significant medical bills.

He wasn't sure when the mother-of-two would return to New Zealand.

"There are medical issues about when safely and optimally Abby can go," Bridges said. "I don't know if that's going to be sometime this week, or a bit longer."

Yeah, it's a nice thing for him to do. I don't see it helping him in the polls though. Unfortunately.
