Rikkitic:

A woman's reproductive status has nothing whatsoever to do with her other abilities.

In order for that to be true, you would need to believe that in the 6wks additional leave that Jacinda has already signalled she will be taking, that she would have literally achieved nothing had she been acting as PM

And what possible difference does that make? A woman's reproductive status has nothing whatsoever to do with her other abilities.

Unfortunately, science says differently.

Also, apparently the baby was unexpected! Our esteemed "leader", doesn't understand the link between unprotected sex, and babies. Wow.

When I read the news I was expecting this thread to turn juvenile and sexist. I wasn't wrong. Good grief

There is an important distinction between “unexpected” and “unplanned”
People receiving IVF treatment generally do not have “expectations”

If JA can continue to perform to the expected level in the role of PM while raising a child, then so be it, who cares.

As a woman it is good she is pregnant. As a PM she should resign as PM is no ordinary position. I guess she will also breast feed in question time.

I am a fan of woman having babies and working and doing whatever they want, but not as PM. She is not only PM, she is leader of a coalition that will take a lot of strength and resilience.

I do not celebrate with a lot of other NZers at this news. But that is my opinion and I am sticking with it.

It's a tough call. I didn't vote for Labour, and we've personally been burnt by an employee who signed an IEA for a management position and stated that there wasn't any reason that they could not fulfil the role, yet three months later revealed they were five months pregnant (and knew it at the time of signing the IEA) and that consequently the role was too much for them. We let her resign rather than engage in a battle, despite it costing us dearly.

As you agree, the role of PM is very important and all encompassing, and therefore expectations of performance are high.

I'm keeping an open mind.

It is my opinion...as I said and I am sticking with it as I know what a woman goes through during, at and after pregnancy. Maybe in some jobs you could just delegate some of the pressure, but not in this job.

And that is her decision. Oh and she does not lead alone and PMs delegate very successfully.

With what is being said in this thread I feel that GZ has found a portal back in time.

Why contribute then?

I can't see this government lasting the 3 years now more  than ever.

Many people who contribute on these forums are entitled to their opinions but lets deal with issues of major concerns.  Many leaders from around the world have and are offering the congratulations It a shame some of you cant do the same. Shame on you no matter what this woman does you will always find fault.  I also have an opinion and that is that if you have nothing more important in your lives than to sit back and criticise the present PM because she is pregnant you need to get a life, why are you so unhappy with your lo?? . Families are what make most of us stronger. Many very successful woman in very important positions have proven they are capable of raising families and carrying out responsible jobs. Get a life guys (or gals) You are just losing respect from those of us who have open minds.

I congratulate her as a person, just not as PM.

So far her Government has backtracked on:

- Forestry planting

- House building programs

- Immigration restrictions

- Sale of NZ land/farms to overseas buyers

Their signaled rental housing policy has already meant landlords are selling up and getting out of the game causing a rental crisis.

All this after just 2 months???

If ever we need a full-time PM its now. I watched her on The Project the other night and thought to myself that she didnt act as a PM at all, and now she is pregnant...what will be next...

It will be interesting to see how WP handles the role of PM for 6 weeks or possibly longer. It's different than just standing in for her while she is overseas.

Especially if there is any form of crisis. Would he be telling Labour ministers what to do for instance?
