An interesting article. Apparently over half of kiwis have a religious beliefs, which is a majority (albeit as slim as the coalition's). Therefore to say religion is irrelevant is actually incorrect. The views of the majority are more important than the minority.

Furthermore, to imply religion is irrelevant is to write-off the good works undertaken in the name of religion, e.g. salvation army etc.

If you object to a supposedly Christian viewpoint expressed by any other member perhaps you could say ' those views will resonate with a fewer people than historically' but to pass misguided judgements as fact makes your points irrelevant.

It never ceases to amaze me those who call for religion to be ended when in the name of faith, far more good is done than bad.

Plenty of terrible terrible things have been done in the name of someone's God but those crazy people would certainly just find another reason to replace it if God wasn't such a convient excuse

Politics subforum is for the thick skinned. So I will just post here, again: STFU about religion and no personal attacks.

I don't care if you believe only married couples should have kids, or if only man and woman should be allowed to marry. I don't care if you believe in God or if you believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In here everyone follows the FUG and I am the BDFL. It is that easy.

While I was writing my reply all these other posts appeared, along with a warning. I don't think I crossed any lines but I would rather not put it to the test so I will not post my statement. Instead, I will just say that I think the sanctity of marriage is important to those who believe in it, and it makes no difference whatsoever to those who don't. The nature of marriage has evolved. Society has changed. People are perfectly capable of being committed to each other for life and raising excellent children without the need for a stamp of approval from some authority, whether religious or secular. It is nonsense to try to infer that not choosing traditional marriage somehow translates to lack of political commitment. It is also silly to suggest that broken homes come from unmarried relationships. I don't have divorce statistics at hand but I'm pretty sure being married has very little to do with staying together these days.

Other than that, I stand by my previous statements but won't go into them again.

freitasm: FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster), the deity in the Pastafarian "faith".

I don't think I would ever have guessed that. My education is surely lacking me thinks.

I had to laugh at the mighty Helen Clark....do not go near social media. Isn't it typical for politicians to use social media when it suits them and abuse when it doesn't.
