For what it's worth, I think the decision to muzzle Don Brash is a mistake. I do think he is a racist and I don't agree with his ideas but I don't think he should be prevented from speaking. Fascist Canadian troublemakers should have no right of 'free speech' in this country, but great care must be taken before denying this important right to our own citizens. It should only happen in exceptional circumstances and I don't think Brash meets that test.

I have a nagging feeling that Brash was behind Southern and co coming to NZ. Probably wrong but it just nags away at me.

Even if true it shouldn't affect his own right to speak. It certainly ought to affect his credibility, if he still has any.

Apart from the fact that Brash isn't a fascist, I suspect it's also a mistake as it's probably a "false flag" event.

The students from the Politics Society invited him, then students from the Politics Society advised the vice chancellor there might be violence etc (very bloody unlikely IMO - but anyway).  If she was led to believe those threats were real - she has no choice.

Brash is  a member of the "Free Speech Coalition", very upset about the Molyneux/Southern situation.

The Politics Society and Brash probably set the whole thing up.  If so - then I feel for the vice chancellor - having to deal with a BS situation, unable to "prove" that she'd been set up, and also now a target of political sniping.

Dirty tricks happen.  Even in NZ.

I doubt it.  I'd allow him his claim that he didn't really know that those fascists are fascists. Superficially they may seem reasonably moderate, some digging may be needed to understand why they're espousing a particular collection of views.

IMO he presents his views very poorly - but he's a classical liberal, his views are rational and not fundamentally evil.  He's probably not a bad person - IMO he's a typical academic.

OTOH the subjects of this thread, call them fascists or alt-right or "paleo-conservative" or whatever, they are evil.

The far left loves to stir up a whole lot of nothing, they are clearly terrified of freedom of speech, unless it's their agenda that is being pushed of course.

Anything they don't agree with is automatically labeled 'hate speech', they simply can't handle it. What a joke.

What is the 'far left' in your view? Terms that get tossed around with no definition don't mean anything. Do you have a point or are you just name-calling?

Those that are so scared of discourse and having their feelings by people's words that they demand to have said person(s) banned.

OK - so the "far left" are people like Apple?

Sounds a little better than the far right.  Putin for example just puts a bullet through the heads of critics.

They have some issues in Australia too:

https://www.smh.com.au/national/sky-news-after-dark-a-digital-nuremberg-rally-20180807-p4zvxr.html#comments

Nazis, lunatics and obvious bullsh!tters didn’t used to get invited onto national news programs to discuss their take on the events of the day. Once upon a time, the only thing Nazis got from us was a bullet. Lunatics got treatment, and bullsh!tters were laughed off stage.

Uhh people like 'Apple'?

People go too far on both sides, pointing out one example doesn't automatically make the other any less dangerous, or make it disappear.

Isn't that incredible Trump and his supporters call all other people "snowflakes" but are themselves the first ones to cry "witch hunt"?
