gzt: Bennett on tv this morning was more or less hinting at extramarital type behavior. It seems they have hinted he is mentally unstable and hinting at philandering which is a fairly heavy character attack and unusual these days in politics. There is obviously a lot at stake. The level of quid pro quo that might be required to keep Bridges in power is starting to worry me.

This is National trying to bring in more of the US style of politics and campaigning. In the past here no one really cared about the private lives of politicians. They are borrowing language from the Trump style of republicans in their twitter feeds more and more as well.

dejadeadnz:

... it's hard to imagine that he hasn't gone to a lawyer before doing all this. Any lawyer would have told him that this is a bad idea from a criminal law POV and also in terms of risking a defamation lawsuit, if he isn't telling the truth. So either JLR hasn't gone to a lawyer and/or has completely ignored his or his advice.

...or JLR is telling the truth.

Interestingly, Winston Peters has commented:

NZHerald:

Peters said it was clear that Ross, who says he has a taped phone conversation with Bridges and is laying a formal complaint with police about alleged electoral donation fraud, was getting sound legal advice.

He's never shied away from being a stirrer when given an opportunity!

"What was put to him was inappropriate behaviour that is unacceptable from a married Member of Parliament."

PBennet quote. Does she mean that single people or unmarried people have different areas of acceptance.  I think the best thing for the National party would be have a complete clean out and star afreshh

I am not stating this is what happened...

Do you not think it less appropriate for a married man to approach a (wo)man for a sexual relationship than it would be for a single man to do the same, assuming said woman isn't his wife?

Wow.  That JLR audio recording is simply awful.

There shouldn't be different rules because of your marital status color etc.  Her statement is another indication of the poor leadership qualities she and SB have shown. Get rid of them both and start afresh.

Just listened to the audio OF JLR wow someone is F**** useless. I wonder how she feels when she hears this. Surely this is the nail in the coffin for SB

I think what people do privately is their own business and their own responsibility.

Having listened to the audio.  I don't think SB has a legal problem, but I think he will have problems in caucus.

I don't think JLR comes across very well at all in the tape.  With the benefit of hindsight, it sounds like he is fishing and trying to set SB up.

Also shows that despite JLR's claim that he is 'naive' about the legal treatment of political donations, he has a higher level of knowledge than SB and is advising him on it.

I think the tape shows them both as bad. Thankfully Ross has gone, probably for good and Bridges should join him. Simon Bridges is unfit for Leadership of teh National Party and unfit to be a Prime Minister. If he truly cares about the party and the work it is doing he should do the right thing and resign.

If anyone has trouble following the tape, here is a transcript.

SB (or someone else - Goodfellow) has a potential legal problem.

The 100k donation was made, and not reported within the 10 day (IIRC) reporting period.

Bridges is arguing against what JLR had on tape - the tape makes it very clear that he knew 100% about the donation and who made it,  and shouldn't even bother to do what he is now - trying to divert to discuss "7 x $15k donations".  He may have been a lawyer, but that lacks dignity and respect for anybody with a pair of working ears and a brain.  (The deaf can read the transcript).

Up to National Party voters I guess to see if they're happy to have a leader who's prepared to "sell" MP positions (2x as requested) to Chinese candidates - but apparently not Filipinos or Indians.

Up to National MP's to decide if they'd support a leader who's on record shafting other MPs behind their backs.  An "apology" won't do.

I'm listening to Bridges trying to demonise JLR on the radio.  JLR's morality isn't the issue - he's gone.

It's more difficult to "prove" that words "sounds like" something, than it is to deny words that were very clearly said.

Sure - he was fishing, but his motives matter less than what he uncovered.

Should appeal to the "swinging voter".
