MikeB4: maybe Judith Collins having another bid for the top.

Judith "fake news - and double down on it" Collins.

Surely the National Party can do better than that!

I would take Amy Adams over Collins

Given the existing leader is of a similar nasty hard-right ilk, I would say they are quintessentially National right now. And this is coming from someone who has only ever voted National or conscientiously abstained in terms of the party vote. I wouldn't be unduly disappointed if almost all of the nasty core of National were routed in the next election and disappear out of the political scene forever. Nikki Kaye is the only prospective National front bencher that I consider to be a decent human being.

I agree re Nickki Kaye, unfortunately I don't believe she will ever come close.

Collins would make a bad PM but a rather good Opposition Leader.

National is in deep trouble for the 2020 election since the have no friends/coalition partners... and now they have an electorate MP "on the outer" who could leave the party, form a new conservative party, etc etc. Exactly what they needed to happen.

How "convenient".

I'm listening to Jami-Lee Ross on National Radio - and he's sounding remarkably calm, coherent and plausible.

Goodness gracious.

Blaze of glory - he's resigning as an MP.

He's certainly adopting a scorched earth tactic.

Sadly we get rogue employees everywhere and this is no different other than he chooses to play it in the media. I am sure it will make a lot of people here happy to see this, but as I said it is just a rogue MP and it will blow over soon enough. Bridges is a very smart man (despite how he comes across).

Has there been a case in living memory where a leader of the opposition has been attacked from within, alleging that the leader was corrupt and breaking campaign finance laws?  It's a bit more than usual bickering and bleating and jockeying for position, about leadership style or difference of political opinion/direction.

JLR is "laying a formal complaint with police - tomorrow", allegedly bringing a recording of a discussion with Bridges about splitting a donation.

Well, Bridges is safe then.   I don't think that the Police have ever brought a prosecution for breach of electoral law before.  ;-)

(though unfortunately for him, he's not in a position to retrospectively change the law so that it was legal)

What a spectacle!

Actually, on reflection, I wouldn't be surprised if the Police do take action in this instance.

My reasons for thinking this are not backed up by hard evidence (and will likely be decried at tin-foil-hat material by some here) but I will watch with interest.

Good grief what a shambles. This I believe is a pivotal moment for the National Party, its future is very much in the balance and they need to play this very carefully. Their credibility as a whole is on the line. I am not convinced that Simon Bridges is the Leader that can navigate them through this. They have been through similar in the past and come out OK but these are different times people and information are harder to control.  Bridges could take Trumps lead and call it all fake news but he will have to learn to never construct a sentence that completes.
