When is the time? I would have thought now was an excellent time, what with it being particularly relevant and all.

What I don't like is you deciding what I get to see. I also object to you deciding what other people get to see (except your kids as you are responsible for their well-being). Myself, personally I have no wish to see the video (or similar material) that is being talked about, so I chose not to look. That's pretty much it.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with YouTube or Facebook or any other website removing objectionable content from their web servers. But that's not what we are talking about.

Again, who decides what to censor, when, and for how long? If ISPs are acting ultra vires then that is not acceptable.

You are making the wrong argument, at the wrong time, in the wrong place. It is unfortunate that you can't see that. What is being discussed here is a major tragedy, not the pros and cons of censorship. Your argument is like someone demanding to know who farted when Apollo 13 has just been ripped by a major explosion. It is inappropriate and out of context.

I don't think there is ever a bad time to talk about how absurd war is, how old men make decisions and young people die. - George Clooney

Hopefully long enough for the GCSB etc to set up systems to monitor and analyse chat - and usurp attempts by alt right terrorists to remain anonymous.

So the same tolerance should apply to kiddy porn and Islamic extremists showing gory stuff??
I think you've misread the room and belong with your fellow extremists on Whale Oil or Kiwiblog rather than Geekzone.

Er, no. That would be dumb. I actually agree with the Karl Popper cartoon you posted.

Please keep the "censorship" discussions to another thread if it needs to exist at all.

One good question I've seen repeated everywhere: with so much surveillance and with perpetrator posting so much "content" publicly in the last few days, how come security services didn't know this?

This is a crime against us all.

I trust that everyone that was affected by the earthquakes will be as supportive to everyone affected by this tragedy.

And please respect your own mental health: seeking and programming this macabre imagery into your mind must only damage you and those you love.

And interesting analysis of the white supremacy ideology threat. This was a series of tweets but read through the Thread Reader App.

That scares the hell out of me

They were probably looking in the wrong direction. They probably deemed a threat from the victims was a greater threat, this is a mistake made elsewhere.
