The area where the other arrests were made is close to where a friend of my son lives.  I've been there, it's a poor Chch suburb with cheap flats etc, and very multicultural.

What suburb is that, if you don't mind saying.

Phillipstown/Linwood area.

Fred99: How do you know it's only his word if you don't investigate the allegation? What if, heavens forbid, his allegation was true and there are other cops prepared to back that up? You're the one who's prancing around declaring that he should have no right to be heard on this. And you're a disgrace for suggesting this in a country with the rule of law. We can't have a society where the so called moral majority just decides cart blanche to ignore the allegations of unpopular people just because "we" judge this to be a waste of time.

Stop accusing me of things I haven't said, twisting and distorting things to suit.

I said have an investigation (for a few seconds).  You've interpreted that as meaning don't investigate at all.  If no (other) officers back up the allegation, forgetabout.  There won't be any independent witnesses to back up the allegation.

It's got nothing to do with rejecting allegations made by unpopular people.

Stop being overbearingly precious - by suggesting/implying that I condone behaviour like that by police.  Put your big boy pants on, and apply some pragmatism.

*edit referencing highlighted text.  Not in any way have I suggested this, in fact I've suggested that he could (or even should) lay a complaint.

The Prime Minister disagrees with Trump's view that white nationalism is not a threat, in a forceful way. When asked if she agreed, her response is a one word "No"

Nationalism sentiment has been growing everywhere, people feel like they are excluded because they can't get ahead in life so they funnel their rage into something they can identify themselves with - a "common enemy" even if the enemy is imaginary.

Correct. But I can't help but stress what I wrote previously again. Some of our mainstream politicians are (most likely not intentionally nor maliciously) contributing to the nonsense that somehow we can overcome some of the macro-economic, globalisation, and other inevitable forces to return the excluded back to the "Good Old Days" are helping to (unintentionally I hope) give legitimacy to the twisted thinking of these people. Because the so-called "enemy" is seen as embodying the "things" that are standing between us and the Good Old Days. The longer society delays confronting the reality of needing to assist the lower/middle-lower economic classes to upskill, that their old jobs aren't coming back, that society needs to embrace multiculturalism, and that we can't roll the clock back, the more problems we will have.

Is there a list of ISP's that didn't block certain websites? Just curious.

@freitasm

There's a vital word missing in your post, added in bold above for clarity.

No intelligent person should believe that a bona fide investigation should take a few seconds (and I am obviously not reading your words literally). Applying the most generous interpretation to your words, you're still suggesting that this allegation should not be the subject of a serious investigation. And speaking purely for myself, I have utter contempt for your attitude and people like you. The mere fact that you approve of some kind of fob off investigation of this nature is not materially different from simply dismissing the person's accusations out of hand. If you go around saying stupid things on a public forum, don't cry when someone calls you out for it.

Guys, can you take this somewhere else? We should be mourning the victims and thinking about the way forward.

What is wrong with "No to Sharia law."? We have one set of laws that apply to everyone here.

What's wrong with it is that it appeals to some pathetic trope that Muslims in NZ want sharia law and that they support the imposition of such when there's no evidence for this. It serves to "other" and marginalise religious and ethnic minorities on the basis of a strawman that is entirely the figment of the imagination of the hard right. The dog whistle behind the messaging ought to be readily apparent -- it's not a bona fide expression of support for equality.

Get off your high horse.  I'm not suggesting a "fob off" investigation, but that if there's any investigation and no police witness to corroborate (almost certain), then the investigation won't be a very long one.

If you think it's worth grilling other police officers who might have been near enough to hear something until they 'fess up, I disagree.  I have no expectation that they would - even if the allegations were true and they witnessed it.

I'm done with this aspect of discussion.  In the overall context of what happened yesterday and the topic of the thread, you're grandstanding over something incredibly trivial.
