I really wish that would quit happening. Every time I post a response to someone without quoting, half-a dozen people manage to sneak in unrelated other posts before mine appears. When I do quote, there is nothing in the way and I look like a dork.

I almost always quote, carefully, so that I am not quoting 18 pages to add one word. I find it makes things clearer.

Woke up this morning as dawn broke, to fleeting moments when I'd forgotten yesterday now gone, and it hurts worse.

I couldn't sleep last night till about 2am, then the neighbours alarm went off at 6am, was awake like a bolt of lightning. Like you, it took around 15 seconds for the innocence of a new day to be utterly destroyed.

If I feel this bad, I can't really imagine those who are directly affected feel.

There are also some pretty disturbed females out there. Pauline Hanson is one. Marine Le Pen is another. That awful alt-right blond who wanted to spew her bile here (I honestly can't remember her name) is yet another. What about those images of adoring women holding their babies up to be blessed by Donald Trump at his rallies? I'm not sure there is a gender element here, except maybe in the sense that rabid women find partners more easily than rabid men. Or maybe they just don't commit mass murder when they get sexually frustrated.

Lauren Southern?
And as for the camouflague-arrested-guy, wrong place wrong time, but now he (apparently) wants compensation? Come on mate...

Sigh. Superficially nice but intellectually vacuous comments like these are so frustrating. Life's not all about getting along and merely brushing the hard conversations under the carpet.

--snip--

Or do we just prefer to resort to platitudes and play nice?

I think you already should know that it's entirely possible for my suggested actions to occur at the same time as the other things you are suggest are happening. No where did I suggest sweeping anything under the carpet or not having conversations as a country about what actions we take going forward to avert repeated incidences. However, primarily the decisions made will come after investigations are made and (hopefully intelligent) discussions with our leaders are held. In the meantime, what I was merely suggesting, is that given that everyone is rightfully raw and probably even more jumpy, we take a breath before posting and check our tones. I note some people have put more effort into this than others.

I read Rikkitics post and typed a response in about 3 seconds, I thought it was worth the risk :)

What the media emphasises and what the gist of the story actually was, are completely different issues. Always. 100% of the time.

Last night, after seeing the video posted by the gunman turn up in my twitter feed (retweeted by someone I don't directly follow), I felt quite shocked, but the impact of it was more profound than I might have expected. I would consider myself reasonably hardened to violence but despite waiting weeks for a new game (FPS) to arrive, having gotten up early yesterday esp to go and get it before work etc and being excited to get home to play it last night. It's still sitting in it's wrapper on top of my PS4, unopened. Everytime I think about playing it, I feel revolted by the concept.

Like TDG I feel horribly numb and then I'll catch a snippet on the tv/radio and feel wildly emotional.

This morning I had to sit down with my 9 year old so I could explain as best I could, in language I was happy for him to hear it in, what happened.  It felt like a low point in my parenting career. The look on his face destroyed me. I just felt he needed prewarning since I expect this to be the topic everyone is discussing for the forseeable future.

All I can do is make sure he knows where I am if he has questions and let him know he can seek me out.

I echo that. I’m going back tomorrow to find someone to give flowers to instead of the wall

I’d be miffed too, for 18 nano seconds, but we need to know timelines first. But I’d rather be handcuffed then released than the police dither. Yesterday was not the time to sit down and contemplate

I've not referenced what that was about, as I'm thoroughly done with it as an off-topic, mainly irrelevant side story.

More generally, we're being bombarded with news, it's a developing story, and it's very hard to get an overall picture.

The wikipedia page is good, subject to the normal proviso of the accuracy of anything on wikipedia.

The page is being updated every few minutes, it's as concise and accurate a picture as you're likely to get anywhere.

Let me reference it for you then. After picking a fight with a lawyer on a separate side issue you now want to pick a fight on another side issue?

It appeared as a big headline in a major news site "person wrongful arrested wants compensation". If that's not an emphasis I don't know what is. I see that the headlines now has been changed by their editor as it no longer reads like that.
