DarthKermit:

I don't see what is gained by hushing up his name. That psycho Anders Behring Breivik from the Norway massacres has his name mentioned. Yes, our local massacre is a lot more recent and our Aussie friend hasn't yet had his trial.

I assume that the thinking is that the less his name and image are bandied about, the less notoriety he will receive, and the less he will be held up as hero to other like minded people as a result.

Why does it take a year for a trial, Would have thought this trial would have been bought forward to asap.

Maybe a mental assessment to see if he's capable of a trial

Maybe the prosecution needs to furnish their case to the defence so the defence can make their case on that, read that somewhere.

I believe that he's already had an assessment, and has been found fit to stand trial.

Justice Mander said mental health assessments of the defendant had been completed with no issues arising regarding his fitness to plead or stand trial. A fitness hearing was not required.

The delay doesn't really bother me.  He has no defence and is already in the perfect place.

I've visited the prison where he's held (for work - years ago).  It's about as brutal and dehumanising a place as could be created IMO - perhaps barely short of breaching basic NZ human rights, providing the bare minimum - but in reasonable physical comfort.  Another year for him, in his head he can go through what he's done a million times, nobody cares, nobody will even really know.

He's "home" - right where he belongs.

The delay may not bother you, or others not personally impacted by the March 15 outrage.

But it matters to the survivors, and to the families of the dead and wounded.

If it wasn't tragic, his non-guilty plea would be funny.

Given the mountain of self produced evidence, the video, my only thinking is he's trying to get an "innocent because of insanity" verdict.

I haven't heard him claim a dog was ordering him to kill, or a demon possessed him

Do we have any attorneys here, because I've always found the concept confusing. It could be argued any serial killer is insane.

Does it mean as someone kills more people the killer deserves more lenience?

Sorry, I'm just irritated and frustrated at his innocent plea.

Yes - I get that.

But in context, his guilt isn't in doubt, where he's at is possibly worse than where he'll be after conviction.  The idiot will be mulling through his head what he's going to say at trial.  Now that's torture - and 100% self-inflicted.

Trial delays are bad.  This from a few years ago:

The national average waiting time for a jury-trial case from first appearance to sentencing was now 462 days, up from 390 days in the year to June last year. Judge Rea's aim is to bring that number down to 154, where it was five years ago.

I don't know if that's improved since then, but  the scumbag isn't getting any special treatment from what I can see.

I think he has pleaded not guilty so he can keep this alive. He smiled at court today.

I can't now find the article but he saw nothing from his video link, he had no knowledge of what was going on in court with victims etc. He was seen though by them. He didn't get "his day in court" so to speak, he was denied visual access to everything bar the judge and his two lawyers.

This is what I think as well by pleading not guilty he is keeping it alive and with the trial date a year out this is going to make it very hard for the victims families.

freitasm: The shooter has pleaded not guilty and says he was not the shooter. Trial set for May 2020.

The not guilty plea was inevitable and predictable. This is no surprise. Imo someone needs to set up a briefing meeting for the victims so they know what to expect from each coming stage of the trial, what the defence will have to show, how the prosecution will proceed in general terms and things like that. Without some overview and guidance of the process coming it will be unnecessarily painful for some on a daily basis.

Warrant issued by Hon Jill L Burkhardt, US Magistrate Judge, authorising Michael J Rod, FBI Special Agent, to search premises and servers of 8chan in relation to activities conducted by the shooter of a synagogue and arson of a mosque.

Pages five and six: "I scorched a mosque in Escondido with gasoline a week after *********'s sacrifice and they never found shit on me." Additionally, he wronte "I spray-painted on the parking lot. I wrote 'For *********..."

Page six: "During the interview, ******* (Mod MF removed name of US-based accused) also stated that he was insired by individuals such as Adolph Hitler and *********."

Page seven: "Investigators conducted an online search for "*********" and noted that he was arrested for the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand that occurred on March 15, 2019 and is believed to be a white supremacist. Investigators also learned "r/pol/" is a reference to an online political discussion board that has been characterized as predominately racist, espousing views embraced by white supremacist groups"

Page ten: "Agents seek IP address and metadata information about Earnest's original posting and the postings of all of the individuals who responded to the subject posting and/or commented about it. Additionally, agents seek information about any other posting coming from the IP address used by Earnest to post the subject posting."

Page ten: "or example, as described above, ****** (Mod MF removed name of US-based accused) himself was inspired by the Christchurch event in New Zealand."

As per forum rules the name of the accused Christchurch shooter was replaced with ******. I have also replaced the name of the self-confessed American-shooter/arsonist. The full warrant is in the link provided.

Its quite simple really...a standard murder trial takes several months to come to trial, but one of this magnitude takes so long because the prosecutors need to build their case and deal with huge volumes of witnesses and evidence. I assume if he pleaded guilty it would be done and dusted in a few months.

We dont want the police/prosecutors to screw it up, so they need time to get it right. Remember the world is watching.

I'd rather the prosecution take their time and build up an air-tight case against him. The last thing we need is for him to get off due to some technicality.

Man who shared Christchurch video sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Philip Arps, who runs Beneficial Insulation - a firm that uses neo-Nazi imagery - pleaded guilty in April to two charges of distributing objectionable material.

The 44-year-old sent a copy of the footage, which was filmed by the killer, to about 30 people soon after the massacre.

This morning in the Christchurch District Court, judge Stephen O'Driscoll said when Arps was asked for his opinion of the video, he said it was "awesome".

Good. Once he's out, no interwebs and so forth for 6 months. I figure he will be watched and any indiscretions will amount to further holidays funded by the Queen. Hard line and all that
