Gun owners are registered. Firearms Licence

Do gun owners not want registration of weapons? Ive not read that. I had a fireams licence, looked like a drivers ,licence, included written and oral questions, police report, police visit, so more intensive than a driver licence. I doubt many gun owners would care if there was a document that lined up their name and their guns. There is clear evidence of that match up for most anyway re a shop purchase. Im not sure now what happens for a private sale

And gun owners have to do what to maintain that licence ?

AFAIK Guns themselves do not have to be registered , nor are there limits on how many guns or ammunition an owner can have.

Its harder the maintain registration as a Nurse than owning a gun.

Nothing AFAIK to retain it. Same as a driver licence. I don't count a small fee that covers 10 years as a cost. Gun registrations isnt an issue for most people. For most people its a competition or sporting or farm pest control product

Its harder to maintain registration as a Nurse than owning a car.

Chch terror victim's praise for Trump typical of his 'generosity'

by Stuff reporters

Christchurch mosque attack survivor Farid Ahmed has during a surprise visit to the White House praised Donald Trump's leadership as the president faces a political storm over racism.

Farid Ahmed, whose wife Husna was killed on March 15, joined a meeting of survivors of religious persecution in Washington DC for a meeting with President Trump on Thursday (NZ time).

Ahmed thanked Trump for his humanity and standing up for religious groups, prompting reaction that Ahmed was again showing great love and generosity even if the subject was undeserving.

Trump has whipped up anti-immigrant sentiment over the past week starting with a series of racist tweets attacking four Democrat congresswomen of colour who have criticised him. At a rally on Wednesday (US time), the crowd responded to his attacks on a Somali-born Muslim congresswoman with chants of "Send her back! Send her back!"
...
Massey University sociologist Paul Spoonley said Ahmed's comments reflected the March 15 survivor's loving and generous nature.

"However, I'm not sure whether President Trump deserves the praise. I think given everything he's done while he's been in office and before, it doesn't signal a tolerant politician.

"I'm not sure there's many others who'd be as generous, so I think it's a reflection of the man who offered [the comments] but not a general perception of Trump's willingness to embrace diversity."

Spoonley said Trump would "benefit" from the "photo opportunity".

After Trump's introduction to the Washington meeting, Ahmed, who was recently introduced to Prince William during the prince's Christchurch visit, asked the president if he could say a few words.

"Mr President, thank you from New Zealand," Ahmed said.

"Thank you for your leadership, standing up for humanity, standing up for religious groups and their rights and thank you for supporting us after the 15 March tragedy in Christchurch. God bless you, and God bless United States."

Trump thanked Ahmed and said "you went through a lot".

"I know all about what happened and that was a terrible situation, thank you very much for being here ... appreciate it."

The pair then shook hands.
...
Trump has in the past suggested mosques and Muslims should be tracked, Muslims be banned from the United States, and claimed "Islam hates us". This week, US lawmakers voted to condemn Trump's "racist comments" against four congresswoman of colour.
...
Ahmed and his wife of 24 years were in separate rooms inside the Al Noor Mosque in Deans Ave when the gunman opened fire.

Farid Ahmed, who is paraplegic after a crash in Nelson nearly 20 years ago, quickly headed for the exit.

His wife and a group of women took some children out to safety as another group of women hid in a toilet inside the mosque.

Once the children were safe she went back to the mosque to check on her husband. As she made her way towards the mosque the mother-of-one was shot dead on the footpath.

I'm sorry. The shooter was inspired by Trump. Trump did not say anything loudly about this event. I am not sure if this is a reflection on love and generosity, or if just a photo op for Trump.

Disgusted.

Farid Ahmed is either incredibly naive or has received his daily news from another planet for the last few years.

Trump is just using all of them for a photo op. He probably washed his hands as soon as they left.

Some background - this from the event in Hagley Park a few days after the massacre:

Farid Ahmed, whose wife was killed in the attacks, addressed the crowd.

"I don't want to have a heart that is boiling like a volcano. A volcano has anger, fury, rage; it doesn't have peace, it has hatred.

"It burns itself within and it burns the surroundings. I don't want to have a heart like this and I believe no one does."

He said he forgave and loved the attacker.

"I want a heart that will be full of love and care and full of mercy and will forgive lavishly. This heart doesn't want any more lives to be lost.

"This heart doesn't like that the pain I have gone through ... that any human being should go through that kind of pain. That is why I have chosen peace, I have chosen love and I have forgiven."

I'm sure he's aware of Trump's hatred and evil influence.

If this is his way of sending a message, then so be it.

It doesn't send a message. And makes Trump look good on a photo op, normalising his racism and hate.

You would not go and take a photo with Hitler.

Trumpism strongly advocates for and incites violence from those who believe that Islam is a religion of hate.  This man makes a point of rejecting that.  From the Koran "The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend."

I'm sure there's similar text in the bible.

I'm sure it was intended to send a message, even if that message has been entirely missed and as such it was a politically naive action.

Philosophically sounds good.

In reality the evil side will feed of that.

Trumpism is also feeding off any and all valid and reasoned criticism of Trump - it's making no difference, not working.

I'm sure there's similar text in the bible.

Matthew 5:38-40

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to [accuse] you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well."

Having said that, I am an atheist, and believe religious beliefs usually do more harm than good.

It is hard to criticise Farid Ahmed in view of what he has been through. Most people are probably inclined to be charitable and dismiss it as naivety or lack of understanding. I think it is regrettable, as Trump will be quick to exploit it for all he can. I detest and despise Trump for everything he represents, but I don't condemn Farid Ahmed for endorsing him.

BBC News: Texas Walmart shooting: Twenty killed in El Paso gun attack

03 August 2019

Twenty people have been killed and 26 injured in a mass shooting in the Texas city of El Paso.

Governor Greg Abbott described it as "one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas".

The massacre happened at a Walmart store near the Cielo Vista Mall, a few miles from the US-Mexican border.

A 21-year-old man is in custody.  He has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius.

The first sentence of his manifesto reads:

"In general I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto."
