Batman:

is ABC news politically affiliated or neutral?

ABC, like most media organisations in America, is conservative by our standards, but not rabidly so. Because of that, they are seen by the Fox/Trump brigade as part of the great conspiracy.

don't worry, I'm sure it's from the lab. it's been (open knowledge not conspiracy) study a new type of SARS virus in bats for the last 2 years. US even warned Washington about the lab being a bit lax in security protocols

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/14/state-department-cables-warned-safety-issues-wuhan-lab-studying-bat-coronaviruses/

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/us-officials-raised-alarms-about-safety-issues-in-wuhan-lab-report-2020-4?r=US&IR=T

I'm just waiting for confirmation. does nothing to change the course but gives me closure in this global implosion.

How do you folks rationalise people that are now complaining of overreaction citing the evidence as our hospitals not being full - instead of saying the hospitals aren't full because we all did a good job?

Natural overreaction - the scope of job losses and contraction is now starting to become apparent so people are becoming irrationally critical as if there as something else we could have done.

Part of its is politically based. Back in the day we apparently should have locked our borders to everyone including Kiwis, as far back as Jan 26. Now that the 4 week lockdown has worked, its now time to revitalise the economy/save the economy, but many now seem to want more and more Level 4. I can't work it out. We have done great, its now time to mop up what's left of the virus as we get the economy back. But no. Can't win

Peter Dunne is irrelevant. He was never in touch with reality or facts. His article in News Room is pure click bait nonsense.

A deep-south Florida fishing bait shop owner, concerned about re-opening US economy too soon.

He dislikes Trump intensely, as evideniced by his tshirt: "Most of you traded your country for a red hat"

Let's talk about reopening the economy....

@BarTender I love the parachute analogy. I guess if you take the parachute off too soon it will be OK once you reach 2 meters, you can jump from there safely so it's cool. 😁

So how exactly do you know we are at 2 meters...... As I don't think anyone can definitively say we can see the ground.

The ground is what you see approaching at 9.81 m/s2

Vox: Florida Governor DeSantis declared "World Wrestling Entertainment" an “essential service.” His explanation doesn’t make much sense.

“I think people have been starved for content ... we’re watching, like, reruns from the early 2000s.”

During a news conference on Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was asked to explain a bizarre move: Classifying professional wrestling as an “essential service,” thereby allowing World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to continue to broadcast live shows from a facility near Orlando, despite the state’s stay-at-home order. His answer didn’t inspire confidence that good public health reasons underpinned the decision.

“Obviously, WWE, there’s no crowd of anything, so it’s a very small amount of people,” DeSantis said, overlooking that WWE announced last week that one staffer recently tested positive for Covid-19, and that putting others in a position where they feel obligated to travel to and from work at the live shows is a risky proposition.

...With over 21,600 confirmed Covid-19 cases and more than 570 deaths as of April 15, Florida is currently one of the nation’s coronavirus hot spots. DeSantis, a former Congress member whose zealous support of President Donald Trump was a key part of his successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign, didn’t help matters by refusing to implement a stay-at-home order until the late date of April 2 — after the virus had already had an opportunity to spread among spring breakers who flocked to the state in March.

DeSantis’s comments about wanting to make his state a welcoming place for a variety of sporting events even amid a pandemic reflects his priorities. But his move in particular to classify WWE as “essential” has the whiff of the swamp Trump talked about draining during his 2016 campaign.

DeSantis helped the McMahons on the same day that a super political action committee (PAC) run by Linda McMahon announced it’s pouring money into Florida

WWE is run by Vince McMahon, husband of Linda McMahon, who served in Trump’s cabinet as his small-business administrator from 2017 until 2019, when she became chair of the pro-Trump super PAC America First Action. After weeks of broadcasting taped shows, Vince quickly took advantage of the DeSantis administration’s April 9 memo classifying his business as “essential” by resuming live broadcasts on Monday night. The plan is to continue with them going forward.

While WWE performers are reportedly unhappy with the change of plans, having the ability to do live shows could be important to the company’s bottom line. As wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer has detailed, WWE has lucrative television deals that require almost all of its shows be broadcast live. DeSantis’s classification of the company as an essential service allows McMahon to avoid jeopardizing those agreements.

The CEO of "World Wrestling Entertainment" Vince McMahon is advising Donald Trump on the economy while the "Xtreme Football League" (XFL) files for bankruptcy

MSN by Hector Diaz

President Donald Trump has asked the most prominent owners in American sports to join him in an advisory group to discuss reopening the country during the coronavirus pandemic. Among those owners is WWE’s Vince McMahon, who runs one of the few remaining operations that has not postponed their programming. McMahon’s wrestling shows are still taking place live without fans.

McMahon and Trump are far from casual acquaintances. They both took part in WWE WrestleMania 23 in 2007 as part of an infamous hair vs. hair match. Trump was the victor there, shaving McMahon’s head in WWE’s biggest annual event. Trump later appointed Linda McMahon, former WWE CFO and Vince’s wife, to his cabinet, until 2019. She now runs the pro-Trump SuperPAC, America F1rst Action.

This might not be the first time you’ve seen McMahon’s name in the news this week. His recently rebooted XFL folded as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. What seemed like a promising start to his football league ultimately became a flop, just like his first attempt at an NFL competitor back in the early 2000s. The XFL first announced it would postpone its inaugural season, but later announced the league would shut down. It would eventually declare bankruptcy.

Recently, the state of Florida has deemed WWE an essential business, which allows McMahon to continue running his weekly wrestling programs live, though without an audience. WWE reportedly taped shows, including WrestleMania, up until May in case the government shut them down. That would have allowed the wrestlers to go back home and self quarantine.

Instead, Linda McMahon and her Trump SuperPAC promised to spend $18.5 million in Tampa and Orlando. The next day, Vince McMahon announced WWE would no longer tape shows in advance and would continue doing live shows. Wrestlers are reportedly unhappy with the situation, according to Fightful.
...
As of now, McMahon is still willing to put his performers at risk in order to keep his current contracts. WWE won’t have a full staff, as some of their top performers have opted not to compete during the coronavirus pandemic.

Jacinda Ardern might be "the most effective leader in the planet".

If instead of being proud of being a New Zealander - look at Trump, Bolsonaro and even Morrison - for what we all managed to achieve so far and how Jacinda Ardern is leading the country, then you are probably just trying to complain for the sake of complaining.
