Handle9:
Brash was a libertarian except for the racist dog whistling. He and Peters brought that crap front and centre in NZ politics.

I don't think Brash was deliberately a racist - just ideologically fixed on a position that racists really like.

Brownlee relished being spokesperson for Maori Affairs under Brash, as deputy leader of the opposition and an MP for the least Maori electorate in NZ - a deliberate poke in the eye.  That's how he is - and I'm sure he hasn't changed his spots.  "Haha - I can speak Maori - tahi, rua, toru ..."

It's always a stupid poll "preferred PM"

You can't vote for a person in an election to fill that post.

So National thought to beat the most popular and young PM they would elect a has been and a never was from their museum. They seem to think that offering a juxtaposition in leadership they will win over the young electorate. Collins has voted against nearly every piece of progressive legislation presented in her 19 years. I guess the example presented by the US, Australia, UK and Brazil was too much for National to resist and had a collective brain fart.

Interesting interview yesterday of Jim Bolger, might have signaled a new direction.
I see Judith Collins has said no tax increases in RNZ radio interview this morning.
Jim Bolger did not mention the tax thing again when interviewed this morning to give his approval of Judith Collins selection though.

On Jerry Brownlee, were the people of Christchurch happy with his handling of the earthquake ?

""
"We have to address the tax issues, now we've done the spending issue ... we're talking massive sums of money and nobody in any political party - even the commentators are not - saying 'well, how do we address this now?'"

He said the government had done a good job in ensuring that New Zealand did not have a Covid-19 problem of the scale that other countries have, "but we do have a problem in the scale of debt that we've loaded on ourselves".

He said tax and rate increases were the stark reality of what New Zealand had to do, and the discussion it must have, but much bolder leadership was needed as a result of Covid-19.

That really depends on who you'd ask.

I'll never forgive him for victim blaming and lies from EQC.  For example:

Denial of EQC's proven incompetence, accusing victims and critics of being "bleaters and moaners".

Publishing "survey data" showing (IIRC) ~60% "generally satisfied" with their dealings with EQC.  IIRC about 50% of claimants had lodged formal complaints against EQC - but the survey only sampled the 50% who hadn't lodged formal complaints. Absolutely stupid - and doubled down on by Brownlee as Minister.

Constantly including the total from the disaster recovery fund (and reinsurance) with "government money" spent on the recovery, when that money was not "government money" at all.  This done to convince the rest of NZ that there was a huge fiscal cost to NZ.

I agree, but it doesn't stop people being polled on it every cycle. (Nor does it stop some people referring to it as it suits them when their preferred candidate is polling ahead)

Regardless it's much closer than similar polls done earlier.

No more silly than the poll which I very much doubt the validity given its source.

News media polls are as relevant and accurate as horoscopes and flat earth YouTube presentations. Polls like opinions are easily manipulated and the results skewed.
