So, leaks from National MP's are still occurring.  Still disenchantment from within the ranks. Ironic given JC has historically leaked to attack Labour, and to attack her own.

Some things never change.

There were, are, and always will be leaks, especially from the opposition. Labour was a mess in opposition, National has gone the same way.

Winners don't need to explain, when you're on the losing team it's a different story.

So National thought to beat the most popular and young PM they would elect a has been and a never was from their museum. They seem to think that offering a juxtaposition in leadership they will win over the young electorate. Collins has voted against nearly every piece of progressive legislation presented in her 19 years. I guess the example presented by the US, Australia, UK and Brazil was too much for National to resist and had a collective brain fart.

I really couldn't have summed Collins up any better. National is toast in the eyes of any moderate, let alone progressive, voters.

quickymart: I'll be curious to see how she responds, Toddy did what he could but I think there were one too many leaks for him to handle.

What were the internal leaks during Muller's term? Seems to me all this is relatively normal mps talking to media.

Can you imagine the campaign slogans?

National - we're competent. No

National - we're stable. Hmm

National - we've got a plan. Bugger.

National - Moaar roads! That'll work

Good God. The last bastion of liberalism in the senior ranks, gone. It's just social conservatism all the way down. Bishop would be basically the only one left.

It really is 2005 all over again.

Soooo that's it for the election. National now have to beat the Labour + Greens totals outright as Swarbrick will take Auckland Central easily. We can probably just close this thread and start a 'guess the margin' one instead.

In all seriousness, this is going to provoke a HUGELY extreme policy position from National now. It's the only way they can win. We are on the road back to Iwi/Kiwi or some form of it. Calling it now.

They're basically destroying their own party vote and will need a lightning rod policy to get people even thinking about voting for them again.

Iwi/Kiwi was pretty tedious messaging but it worked. It will have to be something radical like that to get the same impact.

I'd hope they wouldn't go down the racism route again but be prepared for something like FLAT TAXES or similar.

"Flat taxes" won't fly.

To get within a bull's roar of a balanced budget, that would require either massive spending cuts and/or effectively large tax increases on "middle NZ" (and throwing those who fall below middle ground to the wolves).
