More like Ashley's fairly incompetent ministry was telling lies (again).

I reject the premise of that question.

(It depends if someone just assumed it was already happening or was told it was already happening).

Bloomfield has put his hand up and taken responsibility before; you could infer which is more likely based on the fact he hasn't done that.

What question?

Spot the pattern:
There's plenty of PPE
There's plenty of flu vaccines
We're following the compassionate release policy
We're obeying the law
We're testing border workers
We'll test the border workers this week

Hipkins was adamant (and exasperated) about this. He's evasive when he needs to be but he'd have to be a clown to outright lie.

"Ardern said they knew there was reluctance from staff at the border to be tested. She's reiterating that fingers aren't being pointed. They need to make sure that people don't feel vilified if they have Covid" (from stuff live feed)

I'd be reluctant too.  A positive test now means you get locked up in a hotel for two weeks (possibly your housemates too), with nothing to do.  If I needed to get tested I would, because it's the responsible thing to do.  But, I'd still be very reluctant.

What's worrying is that this seems like another thing that we're only finding out after a journalist has publicly shown what we are told is being done isn't actually happening.

This is not the first time when it comes to the MIQ management of things. What happened to the military personnel bought in specifically to manage this?

Even more concerning is people on social media directly confronting and berating the journalist who found this out. It's not DPRK levels of personality cult worship, but it's still unnerving.

A positive test also means you've got a disease which might kill you, that you could pass on to family or people you live with - and it might kill them too.

As I understood how that worked - it was an option to protect family and close contacts of cases - far preferable to isolation at home where they'd inevitably pass it on to household members.  Probably motivated by the disease getting in to the Pasifica community, where large multi-generational families are the norm.

Not everybody has the ability / space / living conditions to safely isolate an infected person in a household.

Not everyone has a white collar job they can continue while in quarantine for 14 days either. I suspect this is more the main concern for people who face the prospect of not having income (other than the stipend) if they have to suddenly pack their entire family into quarantine. Their rent and other commitments will go on regardless if they are able to go to work or not.

True - three cheers for the "gig economy".

I get that (see bolded text above, in case you missed it).  But personally, I would find detention in a hotel, more of a negative factor than the possibility being vilified on social media.

Yet, the govt is highlighting the social media behaviour as a reason for people may not want to get tested, without acknowledging that locking up (in a hotel) people who test positive, may be somewhat of a deterrent to testing. Juts strikes me as quite contradictory, that's all.

I don't think there's an easy answer to that.  Pushing hard the concept that it's probably not you that's going to die, but your or someone else's loved ones who'll die.  Most people should "get it", but I guess there would be exceptions.

I'd say your point ("last couple of days"), makes Gerry's... and even with all the border issues, I've not heard any real criticism of Labour or Jacinda directly, though she has been complaining that Covid is being politicised, even though this was going to be the "Covid election".

I aim to misbehave.

I used couple of days but it’s been longer then that there was the David Clark stuff and there where the escapees and among other things

If the opposition had been marginally competent the media would have focussed on the border problems. Instead they wasted their energy on conspiracy theories, bitching about not being consulted and making up constitutional conventions. They made the story about them and not about the failings of the government.

all good points and again today Gerry Brownlee said it wasn’t meant to be taken as a conspiracy and then doubles down on what he said

The fact the 'hard and early' lie is still breathlessly reported as fact is pretty ridiculous, but at least there are fewer places to hide with things like Question Time happening again. Probably not a moment too soon tbh.
