Bridge collapse hours before Biden visit to city

Big country with a lot of bridges. Even so you have to wonder about engineering standards and when it's time to close some of these things. One of 3000 bridges previously assessed as 'poor' condition.

Biden to propose minimum 20% income tax for households with net worth US$100 million+:

CNBC: "This minimum tax would make sure that the wealthiest Americans no longer pay a tax rate lower than teachers and firefighters," the document said.

The proposed levy is expected to reduce the deficit by about $360 billion in the next decade, according to the document.

If a wealthy household is already paying 20% on their full income, they won't pay an additional tax under the proposal.

He's called it 'The billionaire tax'. It must have been very tempting to call it the Trump Tax.

Another evil Democrat conspiracy, just like the Plandemic!

That was posted as satire, but then on a hunch I googled how Fox would report it and they've made the satire real:

Marijuana legalization passes in Congress:

CNBC: WASHINGTON — The House passed legislation Friday that would legalize marijuana nationwide, eliminating criminal penalties for anyone who manufactures, distributes or possesses the substance. Lawmakers approved the measure in a 220-204 vote.

It's unclear if this will pass in the Senate.

Interesting analysis of polls looking at whether young voters will turnout and vote for the Democrats or not in the midterms.

The Washington Post - Opinion - The GOP is no longer a party. It’s a movement to impose White Christian nationalism.

today  (intro only)

People might be confused about how a Republican Party that once worried about government overreach now seeks to control medical care for transgender children ...

And why is it that the most ambitious Republicans are spending more time battling nonexistent critical race theory in schools than on health care or inflation?

To explain this, one must acknowledge that the GOP is not a political party anymore. It is a movement dedicated to imposing White Christian nationalism.

The media blandly describes the GOP’s obsessions as “culture wars,” but that suggests there is another side seeking to impose its views on others.

In reality, only one side is repudiating pluralistic democracy - White, Christian and mainly rural Americans who are becoming a minority group and want to maintain their political power.

The result is an alarming pattern: Any moment of social progress is soon followed by reactionary panic and claims of victimhood. ...

I've missed these since Trump refused to participate when he took office.

It's pretty brave of Biden to take it on, but he was darn good.

Trevor Noah was the comedian and he did a great job.

Biden's part:

Query, does anyone here believe this thing about Hunter Biden's laptop? Is it actually a real story, or more conspiracy theory bs?

Can Trump appeal again, or has he reached the end of the line on this one? (is this better in the Trump thread? 🙂)
