SJB:

Because she's in her 80's and it's long overdue for a younger generation to take over.

So...McConnell should step down too? And Trump shouldn't even have another crack at the presidency? (Actually, he probably shouldn't anyway). Joe is getting on too, but I think he's done an okay job, given he's 80.

McConnell definitely. He's a nasty piece of work anyway. Obviously Trump. Biden looks plain decrepit half the time.

Give the next generation a chance otherwise they will be old by the time they take over.

I Agree but you see all these old farts just love POWER with money running second. Mind you I would say most of this money is made post their government service. They all have medium to large ego's, all politicians do and that needs constant feeding. Having said that, the Obama's are one of the most self effacing politicians > Presidents, I have seen in my 60 odd decades.

You all might find this interesting: POTUS Age at Inauguration

Seventies = 2
Sixties = 10
Fifties = 25
Forties = 9

and that's all. Remember the minimum age to be President is at least 35 years old.

As for the next generation, well who is there ? Is there another; Obama, Kennedy or Clinton all in their 40's or even ones in their 50's ??

Does age instil wisdom or just a Fort Knox load of money to run for President. I mean who needs to be a "very stable genius" to be President.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I personally think Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is "one to watch" (not stalkingly or anything), but she may be a little ahead of her time at the moment.

She may be a bit too far out for most mom and dad US voters but she has energy and charisma.

I think you need to follow US politics a lot closer than I do to recognize the outsiders who might be the next generation of shakers and movers. Leading up to the primaries you sometimes see/hear someone who clicks with you and then they don't even get off first base.

This didn't take long.

Republicans announce Biden family investigation after House win (1news.co.nz)

What's really depressing is that the Jan 6th committee investigation is over so Trump won't be forced to give evidence or take the rap he so richly deserves.

And that's the problem with the US, it's become the very gerontocracy that helped collapse the Soviet Union, with a bunch of people who haven't had a fresh idea in 20, 30, 40 years still clinging on to power. Compare the fire and passion of AOC with Grandpa Joe's doddering performance, for example. And I don't mean that as Trump-style name-calling, I mean that he's your grandpa, giving lollies to his grandkids when they visit, telling long rambling stories but that's OK because he's grandpa, and falling asleep in his favourite chair in front of the TV, not any kind of inspirational leader.

A while back I saw an interview with a young, at least compared to the rest of them, Republican politician, where he pointed out that although he had different views than the Democrats on a range of things, they needed to sit down together and find some common ground to move the country ahead. The important thing wasn't to win at any cost, it was to move the country forward, and that meant listening to the other side and working on common solutions. And given how dangerous it is for a Republican to come out and say something like that, you can be fairly sure he really meant it. I don't agree with a lot of his views but I'd probably vote for him because he actually wants to do something and make things better, even if I think some of his ways of doing it are misguided.

As long as the current load of fossils remains in control, no progress can be made.

It might not be as easy for them as simply saying "we want to impeach Biden!"

Even without that, what are they going to impeach him for? AFAIK "you got our guy so now we'll get your guy in a tit-for-tat" isn't really grounds for impeachment. Will they try throwing Hunter's laptop at him?

I know, right? Never mind them going after him on issues Americans care about, oh no. This crap is far more important (to them, anyway).

Speaking to the age point you raised: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/17/politics/nancy-pelosi-congress-age-what-matters/index.html

This is not a good look for Joe, although there are a fair few differences between how he handled this and how Trump handled it.

Biden delivered the most compelling State Of The Union speech of any president in a long time. Some services reported there was an unusual amount of heckling. The most I heard was during his section about Covid response. I'd hazard a guess that came from the out there Taylor-Greene types. Biden handled those in a dignified manner.

I've seen approx 20 minutes of this somewhere in the middle so far earlier today.

Query, did the Democrats heckle Trump when he was delivery his State of the Nation speech? I remember Nancy Pelosi tearing up the script, but apart from that did the Democrats let him speak, or did they yell out like schoolkids (a la Greene and co)?

A write up of his State of the Union speech. As usual, the normal Republican loudmouths simply had to have their say.

Then there is good 'ol Santos!

And then .............
