She is a politician; criticism comes with the job. Labour has had repeated major policy failings under her watch, other than being good at PR I'm not really sure what her legacy is going to be at this stage.

Maybe start with her perfect response to the Christchurch massacre, avoiding possible riots in the streets and gaining enormous credit with the Muslim world. What about the value of all the admiring coverage of her in the international press? This comes back to us in the form of trade and tourism, as well as outsize prestige and influence on the world stage. The only place Ardern was not adored is here.

marmel: As PM she has seen failures in almost every policy she campaigned on.

As PM she has inspired me and I am by no means the only one. She made me feel proud to be a Kiwi, in spite of the shameful things that have occurred here.

Just saw Luxon's tweet (linked from Stuff). He was gracious "On behalf of the National Party, I offer to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern our thanks for her service to New Zealand. She has given her all to this incredibly demanding job and I wish her and her family all the very best for the future. Thank you Jacinda."

The replies are what you'd expect from people who think we live in the USA. People called the PM names, saying she was at the service of the UN, she's an evil tyrant and so on.

Unhinged people, in other words. Almost... I don't know - deplorable?

Can't people be civil? Does everything need to be a dirty fight?

The international press has not be as big of a fan of her recently. She was *never* put under pressure during international interviews. No-one asked her difficult questions. It's easy to smile and joke and come across as nice when you are being thrown softballs all the time. Key had the same scenario.

I don't believe her response to Christchurch was 'perfect'. I don't believe it was viewed that way by the Muslim community either.

What trade have we picked up since she took office, that could reasonably attributed to her alone? You might look into the recent trip into Vietnam where we got *nothing* and gave everything.

Again, tourism, is impossible to gauge given COVID so at best that's a wash. I find it laughable you'd suggest anyone gets on a plane because it's the country that Jacinda leads. Can you think of a single tourism location that has better coverage now than 5 years ago?

Small steps, on a new world. UK agrees free trade deal with New Zealand - BBC News

I think even the most optimistic projections from that deal were that GDP would possibly increase by up to .3%, hardly a legacy to hang your hat on.

Politics in NZ has been a dirty fight for a long time, from both sides.

I have a lot of respect for her and the way she represented NZ on the world stage. I don't have a lot of respect for the non-achievements in several key policy areas.

I genuinely hope we get a Netflix-style sit-down with her at some point because I am far more interested in her opinions of where the country is heading on a non-partisan basis and the challenges she feels she faced had she continued than I am in spending hours listening to Harry (no offence to Harry).

Anyone who thinks we have outgrown tall poppy syndrome just needs to view this thread. Put a dress on the poppy and you can start having witch trials.

"Oh, look - it cost something but we managed to get a lot of people vaccinated before having people dying on the streets."

That sounds like a good legacy to me.

By their own admission, they handled that pretty badly. We were *very* late starting. Auckland remained in lockdown considerably longer than it should have done as a result, which had a massive impact on Aucklander's Mental health and business really suffered.

Most of the negative comments in this thread relate to Labour's lack of policy achievement and she just happens to be the leader, not sure why you have an issue with that. If you want a thread where everyone turns a blind eye to actual outcomes and pretends Labour are awesome start a Jacinda Adern appreciation thread.

I can see more of the usual deflecting rather than actually discussing the actual points.

Please show the evidence to support your claims, rather than just making them.

You really do need to take off those rose tinted glasses. 🙂

There was a bit of criticism from within the Muslim community about her burqa wearing. It wasn't appreciated by a lot of Muslim women. Worn with good intentions but having unintended consequences.

Perhaps I was on a different planet but I don't recall there ever being any hint of riots as a result of the massacre.

Yes, there was a fair degree of admiring coverage in the international press but also some less flattering coverage as well, one example being the Spitting Image skit.

Yes, Jacinda did a reasonably good job of handling White Island and the Christchurch massacre but also under her watch there have been a lot of divisions created within New Zealand. Again policies being enacted with good intentions but having unintended consequences.

I wasn't debating we had any additional trade (though our showing in Vietnam was extremely disappointing), I was disputing Rikki's claim Ardern was responsible for it.

We would have gotten that trade deal regardless (or more less) who was leading the Governing party. These things are usually many many years in the making.

It would just get sabotaged by all the reactionaries who can't stand the thought of anything good coming from the left.

Wow, that is some real dramatisation. Suggesting she be held to account for her losses as well as her wins is hardly akin to burning witches at the stake.
