GV27:
Some political traditions are dumb as hell IMO.
Especially the one that gets them called "the right honorable".... (applies to all politicians equally without prejudice)....
gzt: Seems appropriate for this topic if you'll forgive me for quoting across.@GV27: Labour campaigned on slashing migration and then just didn't.
Did they really? I missed that policy entirely. Do you happen to have a link to the policy?

Didn't they blame Winston for not being able to reduce immigration? That was their go to excuse during the first term

Winston campaigned on 10,000 and Labour was making noises at 30,000. Looks like they compromised by increasing it to over 50,000.

Interesting thanks for that. Going by the article this seems to have been a statement by Andrew Little before he was replaced by Ardern.
She reconfirmed it:

From that same article
"After she took over as Labour leader now Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed she was sticking by slashing migration."

I don't quite understand the point being made here. That was then. This is now. Hasn't Covid radically changed the context?

There were calls here to bring in skilled workers that we are lacking. I guess we arent lacking them anymore...
Labour were in power for almost a full term before Covid hit.
PM is going to miss the Emissions scheme announcement AND the Budget. Didn't realise this was both.
IMO it's not a bad thing. She's become such a dominant figure within the government and there's real doubts about the depth of their talent pool, so this could be a chance for some to boost their profile etc.
Budget being announced atm. Not a lot in there, but being missed is no indexing of tax cuts and inflation forecast to run at 5%+ until 2024.

The Spinoff has a good summary. Predictably, National and ACT are already complaining, but I'm not sure if they have any better ideas (do they? I really don't know).
' cost of living payment of $350 for two million people '
A bribe ?
Surely the better way would have been some sort of tax cut on petrol , or lowering of tax rate for low incomes.
tax then giving it back, is just wasting money in the shuffle .
Disappointing if thats what the best minds come up with .
Any news on how that payment is going to be implemented ? ie how will it actually be paid .
