There you go again. To be fair, I think more houses than wall are currently being built.

Would that be true if Trump got a second term? I doubt it.

Now we really are going off track. If Trump gets a second term, that will be the end of democracy in America and ultimately probably here, too. But this belongs in another thread.

Not suggesting otherwise, I am saying that if Labour only got one term, my statement would be true. I don't want to discuss Trump. You brought him up.

Man this cost of living payment debacle is concerning.

"National Party deputy leader Nicola Willis said it was impossible to know the scale of the problem, but she had a sense it was bigger than just a few thousand dollars.

It was not just ex-pat New Zealanders but also former migrants, she said. "We've been contacted by a man who left New Zealand in 2014, he's now living in India and he got a letter from the IRD advising him he'd be getting the payment." National had also been contacted by French-working former visa holders and a man who left in 2019 but is now in the Philippines who had also received letters, she said.

"My sense is this is very widespread, it's a major muck-up, it's like the Government pressed 'send all' - it's certainly not targeted and for ministers to be dismissive of it is I think quite disrespectful," she said. "What a slap in the face to hardworking Kiwi taxpayers who pay tax only for that to be given to people around the world who haven't been in New Zealand paying tax for many years in some cases."

Willis said the problems have occurred because it was a policy made on the fly and she had a lot of sympathy for IRD which is having to administer it."

What concerns me most is the cost of living payment is supposed to be paid to those who earned less than $70,000 taxable income between 1/4/21 and 31/03/22, how can people who last worked in NZ in prior to this get this payment?

I didn't get it, I earn just over the threshold. Had no idea I was somehow "well-off" now, guess I missed that meeting 😆

If you are over the threshold it doesn't make you 'well-off' but it does make you more well-off than the people who this targets.

No-one should be surprised to hear of the unintended consequences of a policy clearly drawn up in a hell of a hurry. Reminds me of the Business support payments that were all paid in one lump sum.

They possibly still have some investment or similar here in NZ generating taxable income. Somehow that was flagged incorrectly as wages and salary income.

You are being slightly premature with this. It may or may not become a 'debacle', but in no way is it such at this time. To me it has all the hallmarks of a media beat-up by an opposition looking for something to get excited about. No doubt there are some overseas recipients of the payment who probably shouldn't get it. Jacinda Ardern has conceded as much. But are we talking about a thousand, 10,000, millions, a dozen? Most likely it is not more than a handful, which at $300+ a pop, is hardly a 'debacle'.

How can you say that when you have no idea the numbers involved>?

P.S I'll call it what I want

Some other "unsuspecting recipients" -

Both my children are eligible for the payment, they work part time and earn well under the threshold, but I really don't see why they should be eligible as part timers. I guess the Govt can't differentiate between the types of income, only the level of income. I wonder if their claim of 2 million kiwis is short of the mark? Surely if we are going to count teenagers with part time work as being eligible, there will be more?

I stuck my hand out trying to claim it back from them, given it came from me, but neither were keen to cough up......

If and when it becomes a debacle I will also call it that. The premature bit is the unseemly eagerness of the right wing to stick the boot in at the slightest whiff of an opportunity. Maybe some people actually need the money and will appreciate it.

Ah, there you are. Sure I will. But I will wait until there is a reason instead of just assuming one.

The problem is, when it comes to JA and Co, according to you,  nothing they do would ever be classified as a debacle, you'll just downgrade it to a minor issue and dismiss it :)

The IRD make payments all the time, and their IT or whoever contracts to them has created the payment system for this scheme. Either they didn't do this correctly and test, or they werent given the correct criteria. Without knowing this, its all speculation.
