Trouble is some people don't realise with a lot of things in life there has to be a compromise.

In this case standing up for his values was like standing on the tines of a rake and having the handle smack New Zealand in the face.

Remember the problem wasn't our nuclear free status it was about how it was managed wrt to the US ships.

Labour turned S.I.T from a profitable business with a $35m cushion in the bank to this. The 'mega-merger' has been a complete and utter disaster, yet another reason why Labour has to go next year. They just can't manage anything on a large scale without it turning into a major cluster.

That is irrelevant though, the issue here is the S.I.T ran very successfully as an independent educational institute, even offering zero fee courses. Labour has managed to ruin that in a very short space of time by robbing Peter to pay Paul. They also had a very nice cushion as mentioned which would have seen them through the COVID issues over the last few years. That cash is now gone, swallowed up by the merger.

This sort of thing is why this needs to be legislated out of the hands of politicos. Playing silly buggers with people's real incomes for their own political game is abusing the powers to change tax rates (or not change them) and they've shown they can't be trusted with it.

I suspect National will amend their own tax policy next year as well, dropping the top tax rate is political suicide given it is such a small percentage of the population that will gain from it.

The indexing of the tax brackets should occur regularly, not sure every year, but certainly at a set interval (3-5 years). Every year could be administratively inefficient.

I think the prospect of dropping the top tax bracket is a mistake. What actual impact it will have on tax revenue is uncertain (and most likely to benefit PAYE employees anyway), the negative political impact will be far worse, it gives the opposition something to bash National about the ears with.

I find this a good analysis and it does a pretty good job of reflecting my own feelings. I hope she doesn't go, though. Unlike some here, I like her.

I'm not entirely sure that anyone in the current leadership roles would have a realistic chance of both replacing Ms Ardern AND turning labours fortunes (polls) around. Given Robertson would be hung out as the architect of the current economic environment (and despite all the political spin being put to it, he is Finance Minister) and that the economy is going to be a hot topic for the election (it always is) I don't think he'd do much better than Ms Ardern would at the moment.

But if not Grant, who?

I find this a good analysis and it does a pretty good job of reflecting my own feelings. I hope she doesn't go, though. Unlike some here, I like her.

I don't dislike her as a person but in my opinion she wasn't qualified to be the PM. She had no real 'life experience' or any other real jobs before becoming PM. Working for political parties in my view does not give someone the necessary experience to manage a government. I think what we have seen when the pressure came on is she has been unable to prevent the major failings that have occurred. A huge PR team will only get you so far.

Responding in a compassionate way does not necessarily make a great leader/manager unfortunately. What I would like is someone who can move the whole country along, successfully manage major projects/staff and provide confidence to the business sector, none of which she has managed to do.

I personally think her response to the coronavirus pandemic was excellent - and she did move the whole country along: remember "the team of 5 million"? We had such a low death toll we were the envy of a lot of other countries, particularly Australia and the US.
