wellygary:

The CHIPS act just passed in the US,

I wouldn't put too much hope in that, it's been tried before with no notable success. In particular the CHIPS act explicitly prohibits using the money for stock buybacks, which is a good indicator of what the recipients of the funding really want to do with it. And all that means is that they'll instead use the money they would have otherwise spent on infrastructure for buybacks and the CHIPS funding to fill the resulting gap.

Hey, Ukrainians, if you're going to use our self-propelled howitzers for extreme sustained fire, you should at least keep to the designated maintenance cycles ... that thing is a precision instrument, not a plough for ploughing up fields. The way you are, you may have relieved the gun crews, but you haven't given the gun itself a (maintenance) break. :-)

This mornings news bites. Russia recruiting prisoners. Offering $$$, but existing soldiers are complaining of no payments. Many want to stop fighting. All news , unsure how accurate. Sounds like they are trying to push a tractor with a flat battery up hill. Whereas UKR has the opposite issue of motivation

Use it or lose it; In WWII midway, Admiral Yamamoto held his main force battleships in reserve, and didn't use all available reconnaissance resources.

CNN: Russia dangles freedom to prisoners if they fight in Ukraine. Many are taking the deadly gamble.

...Over a month-long investigation, CNN has spoken to inmates caught up in Russia's newest recruitment scheme, along with their relatives and friends. Activists believe hundreds have been approached in dozens of prisons across Russia -- from murderers to drug offenders. ...

Thanks for the suggestion to Google "Only Tanya is left"
Definetly worth a read.

Previous Masyanya cartoons were on the hopeful idea Putin would do the decent thing and fall on a sword.
Then explaining to the children what's going on, with potted history.

The creator said in an interview
https://therussianreader.com/2022/07/14/masyanya-saint-mariuburg/

""
The main tool of humorists exaggeration no longer works, because the absurdity is now so off the scales that no humorist can go further.”
""

We had Medvedev doing his best to act as mad Putin understudy with call to do-over Georgia again.
Its a long list of who is next.

You can tell Putin and his people are scared that the population has it limits, they won't mobilise.
Keeping things to the far flung ethnic provinces, the desperate with financial enticements up to age of 60 and prisons.

Our Rockets fly far but or asses are bare.
Putin and KGB Krill you keep what you kill.

This chap [perun] continues to provide good fact based analysis:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F7mt4rNVY0

In this video he looks at Russian cruise and ballistic missiles, how effective they are and when they will run out.

I've watched it so you don't have to. The answers are 'fairly to moderately' and 'before too long'.

He also looks at the numbers and finds that although Russian missile factories are trying to get up to full speed manufacture, what the Russians have been firing in a week is what the factory can produce in a year.

Because Russia is worried about other threats, it is likely that the rate of missile use against Ukraine will decrease so that Russia can hold some in reserve. Russia has been using missiles that date back to the 60s and 70s - presumably so they can keep some of their more modern missiles in reserve. It's fine to use an older, less accurate missile when your target is something like a shopping centre/military base but to be sure you hit anything important with those missiles, you need to use a few of them.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I thought the term was „lube it or lose it?“ Keeping something in reserve and not using all reconnaissance in a battle is stupid at all but different from overstressing the specs of something in use.  ;-)

Looks like Russia is trying to recreate the Dirlewanger Brigade, whose excesses were so bad that the SS tried repeatedly to have them disbanded.

It was a unit whose behaviour was so appalling that the organisation in charge of running death camps found them unacceptable.

This is some old news I just came across. The former Russian band "Little Big" released an anti-war music video.

The symbols on the glasses are Russian Ruble, dollar, Japanese yen/Chinese yua and Euro, if I'm not mistaken

Radio Free Europe: Popular Punk-Rave Group Leaves Russia Over War In Ukraine

The popular Russian punk-rave band Little Big says it has decided to leave the country over Moscow's ongoing, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

The group issued an anti-war video clip called Generation Cancellation on June 24 to announce that it had rebased in Los Angeles, California.

I had to give my German colleague (now a DBA but formerly ground crew in the Luftwaffe) some stick about the decline of German engineering, suggesting maybe those PzH 2000s are only Sunday drivers!

Well, in times of war and Facebook, who knows what propaganda is true and what is not? But those who are hit by the grenade - whether on a Sunday or not - know exactly. And those who have recently ordered quantities ;-)
