If Putin wants to increase Russia's declining birthrate and repopulate Ukraine with more Russians, dead Russians sire no children.

The Hill: What Putin’s war mobilization decree says and doesn’t say

..The decree does state that service members can be dismissed for age, health reasons or imprisoned.

The mobilization takes effect on Wednesday, but it doesn’t explicitly define when the mobilization period will end....

If all Russians who approve of the Ukraine invasion and wave paper flags were to be drafted, there would be no need to prepare a "secret" law by night and fog, would there? It is difficult to understand why a reasonably clear-thinking person, without any existing threat to his homeland, should give his life for an unasked-for raid on Ukraine by a moneyed elite.

There is a difference between a giant being seriously attacked by a dwarf and the giant just thinking he could eat a dwarf for breakfast. For some Russians, the Rubel drops kopekwise.

In Russia's Yuzhno-Kurilsk, drunken mobilised would-be soldiers are already fighting each other.
Morale through the roof.

Maybe Japan should check the Kuril Islands to see if anyone is left.

I see what you did there :-).

(The term "nacht und nebel" / night and fog, was used in Nazi Germany for certain actions undertaken by the SD and Gestapo).

Really, now I'm completely lost. Who are the Nazis now? The Ukrainians, the Russians, us or maybe you? ;-)

Nazi is a short word for a supporter of National Socialism 1930-1945. After that it is neo-Nazis.

All Germans who were not followers in those times were not Nazis, just like nowadays not all Americans are/were Trump followers. When the regime became widespread, it was too late for them and everything dissenting was suppressed (there were also plenty of German oppositionists who went into the extermination machine of the Nazis).

So the term is completely weird in today's use.

Sergei Elkin's latest cartoon in response to the mobilisation, he used to be the political cartoonist for the Moscow Times but fled Russia after Putin's war started:

The text says, roughly, "What else do I need to do for you lot to finally revolt?".

Press release:

Further sanctions are being imposed on members of President Putin’s inner circle and other representatives of the Russian political elite, as part of the Governments ongoing response to the war in Ukraine, says Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta.

“Ukraine has been clear that the most important action we can take to help them are our ongoing sanctions and supporting them through the conflict, as we continue to do,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

“By targeting these individuals we join global efforts in placing pressure on Putin and those supporting his illegal war in Ukraine.

“Aotearoa New Zealand first moved against powerful and wealthy individuals in Russia with sanctions on political elites in March and May of this year. Today’s sanctions target 19 additional members of Putin’s inner circle who support the illegal invasion of Ukraine and who have been rewarded for their loyalty with wealth and influence.

“Those sanctioned today include Federal Ministers, non-permanent members of Russia’s Security Council, relatives of Putin, and Ramzan Kadyrov, the President of the Chechen Republic, part of the Russian Federation.

“These individuals are part of a network of influence around Putin and have used their positions to threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has already caused thousands of deaths, a massive humanitarian crisis and untold suffering. Any steps by Russia that risk a further escalation of the war in Ukraine are reckless and irresponsible.

“Russia’s so-called “referenda” in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine constitute a new and additional act of aggression and a breach of fundamental rules of international law. Aotearoa New Zealand strongly condemns Russia’s actions.

“Since the passing of the Russia Sanctions Act in March, Aotearoa New Zealand has imposed sanctions on over 1000 individuals and entities, a key part of our efforts to hold Russia accountable and support Ukraine,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

The Russia Sanctions Act allows for a wide range of measures on these individuals and others, including travel bans, asset freezes, prohibitions on financial dealings and bans on ships or aircraft entering New Zealand.

More information about sanctions, travel bans, and export controls against Russia; as well as humanitarian, military, and legal support to Ukraine can be found on the MFAT site here.

The pipelines were filled with gas, but it was never imported. The necessary permit for this has been on hold since February.

What a farce. China, who we all love or don't love, has a least grown from the 1970'e. Credit to them despite the many issues of corruption and racism. Russia, already a super power (then) could rise again to be a super power (military and economically), but they didnt. They are now a joke. The pity is that the whole population is a joke even though its caused by ONE idiot.

My prediction is that Russia will prevail, be a solid country, using its natural resources to take its citizens out of a borderline third world country. Obviously under a new modern regime.

This is like February 1917 all over again. At a certain point the troops simply decided that mutiny was an easier way forward than what their rulers had set them up for.

If you're referring to the February Revolution - deserting soldiers joined the public in uprising against the monarchy.  That's not mutiny, it's a revolution.
