sir1963: [The stolen zoo animals are] probably a meal later that day.

I think it's likely for any stolen zoo animals who survived the Dnipro River crossing will wind up at a high ranking military officer's private menagerie.

When the Soviet Navy Lost 16 Admirals in a Single Accident: The Tu-104 Crash at Pushkin

Paper Skies

The plane crash at Pushkin airfield on February 7, 1981 became the very last accident in the Tupolev Tu-104 history, after which they were permanently retired from service. But the main reason the disaster at Pushkin airfield went down in history was because this single crash had almost entirely beheaded the Soviet Pacific Fleet. That day, in just a few seconds, the Soviet Navy lost 16 admirals and generals, including the commander of the Pacific Fleet admiral Emil Spiridonov.

Vans without boarders, everything is a target.

Jack Ross is a volunteer aid worker leading a British humanitarian group that delivers essential food and medical supplies to civilians and soldiers living and fighting on the Ukrainian frontline.

"It's heartbreaking. We got rocket attacked when we were handing out aid," said Jack Ross in shock. "The Russians are just over there."

Its just what you want to hear asking a checkpoint if you can go down that road, answer, you can but its 50/50 you come back.

After this video from 6 months ago, Russian autocracies cannot shock me.

Any weapons we give to Ukraine is an investment in a better world-wide future.

Interesting if totally non-objective look at how bad things are in the Russian military, including the observation that one reason why the military was allowed to be neglected so badly was the belief, going back to Soviet times, that there'd never be a need to fight a conventional war since the nuclear balance of power would avert it, so why bother maintaining the military?

Putin's war plans seemed foolproof:

1. Take over the remnants of a military superpower with the aid of corrupt oligarchs

2. Run it as a rampant kleptocracy for two decades

3. Start a war in Ukraine with what your corrupt oligarchs tell you is your military

4. ???

5. Profit!

Kleptocracy is inherently expansionist.
What have you left for the next generation to steal?

You must keep acquiring more lands more fiefdoms.
Something the Khans of the Golden Horde could understand.
Those you acquire become your army to take on the next as well.

While some fear breaking Russia, maybe you have to, to break the hold of these forces.

Timothy Snyder has excellent YouTube lectures on Ukraine and its History.

Historian says Russia needs to lose its war in order to become a ‘normal’ European country – and stopping destruction of Ukraine’s power grid is essential
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/28/russia-wins-by-losing-timothy-snyder-on-raising-funds-for-ukrainian-drone-defence

Arrgh, paywall, anyways title pretty much says it, there is hope for Russia if they comprehensively lose.
At that point the whole Kleptocracy stands naked, and the facade of strength through fascism falls as well.
Comprehensively show being liberal democracy does not make you weak, dog tucker.

At very least if Germans, French and Italians don't give them more advanced technology to rearm it buys some decades :-)

Etsy is starting to sell Russian tank armour crafts, Made in Russia, recycled in Ukraine.

(No connection with the seller, and part of the proceeds go to help Ukraine).

Fuck Putin.

Ukraine war: Zelensky aide reveals up to 13,000 war dead - BBC News

Up to 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of Russia's invasion, a senior official has said.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said between 10,000 and 13,000 troops had died.

It is rare for Ukraine to give figures for casualties, and Mr Podolyak's comments have not been confirmed by the country's military.

In June he said between 100 and 200 Ukrainian soldiers were dying daily.

Is there any prospect at all of Putin being shut down in the short term. Not necessarily assassination, but anything - administrative removal, palace coup, illness, inner circle refusing to pass on commands, military defeat, anything at all?

The closest equivalent we have to a European political leader surrounded by sycophants and a brainwashed population who started a ruinous war is that change is unlikely to come from within. Hitler actually survived at least two dozen assassination attempts, and those are only the ones that are known, while Putin has had perhaps one or two.

Also unclear is whether removing Putin will change anything, there are plenty of second bananas available to take over while with Hitler there was no-one, and he made sure it stayed that way.

Why isn't Ukraine lobbing drones and other munitions across the border, targeting infrastructure.?
Tit for tat.
Surely they should be able to cobble something together resembling the Iranian drones?
