The US has now sanctioned the Moscow Exchange. Some YouTube channels are reporting a run on the banks and many closing.

If sanctioning the exchange is that effective I wonder why it took them so long to do it, unless they needed other pressures to be on Russian economy first?

It seems to be Adam Smiths 'Hand of Self interest', a case of Banks, Corporations and Wealthy not wanting to set a precedent that would see more effective sanctions working.

So they pushed the slow boiling of frog in hope that everyone gets tired and its back to normal before their banking,  real estate, yacht sales and such get hit.
See I told you it does not work.

Like in 2014 when it was wet bus tickets all around.

Russian Oligarchs so dominated part of London, the fancy area of town got a nickname Londongrad.
Many Brokers, Bankers, Investment analysts, Tax Avoidance Experts, Estate Agents did well out of this and no doubt want good times to continue. They may even have been drawn into Russian investments and such.

Much like the large Oil and Gas infrastructure companies working In Russian and also on European side of the energy infrastructure.
Everything through to chemical companies, advanced machine tools, and many others.
Oh yes you sell luxury goods too, having Oligarchs unable to outfit their mistresses as they once did is a problem.

I seem to remember a major French company talking to shareholders about opportunities opening for their Russian arm as others left or froze operations early on.

Those pushing that Putin would eventually get the message if you stayed on friendly terms.
Half hoping everyone just gives up and its back to business no matter what.
Ukraine would offer great business opportunities under Russian Autocracy for those with right connections.

Orban's Hungary for example blocked Ukraine support in EU while it got assurance certain of its banks with dealings with Russia were protected.
So part of Europe has more than a foot in the other camp too.
Orban would just prefer if the future Austro-Hungarian Empire was called Hungary-Austro Empire :-)

Pranksters reveal odes to Putin were Russian translations of Nazi verse

The patriotic poetry of Gennady Rakitin has won him quite a following in Russia over the past year. His odes to Vladimir Putin and emotive verses in support of Russia’s war in Ukraine drew appreciation on social media and even the occasional honourable mention in Russian poetry prizes.

But Rakitin’s admirers did not realise one thing: the 18 poems published under his name were in fact Russian translations of Nazi verses penned in the 1930s and 1940s.

One, called Leader, and published with a photograph of Putin, was originally called Führer and written by the Nazi-supporting writer Eberhard Möller in the late 1930s. Another, an ode to Nazi stormtroopers, was translated into Russian and repurposed as a tribute to fighters from the Wagner paramilitary group.

[...]

The authors said that almost all the Nazi poems they discovered fit the current Russian context perfectly, except for a few obvious anachronisms. References to Germany were changed to Russia, but otherwise the poems were published in exact translations.

“Politically, this shows that the ideas of Nazi Germany are close to the ideas of modern Russia, even as Russia claims it is fighting nazism. Culturally, it shows that there is no renaissance of Russian culture, as the authorities claim, but only its degradation,” said the authors.

Maybe it's the circles I move in, but I'm seeing in upsurge in pro-Ukraine and Russia crashing social media posts.

I've seen "this is the last Russian invasion for at least 10 years" post, because of the amount of Russian soldiers and equipment lost.

From what I'm seeing Russia is in serious trouble in the upcoming decades
  • population pyramid (not enough young people)

  • long term arm sales crashing (cheap is cheap, but you need something that works)

  • indeterminate affect of Russian oil market (at least short term bad)

  • possible flaring on Chechen rebellions

  • strengthening of NATO
and there's at least a dozen other swords of Damocles hanging over Russia's head.

Ukraine should be given license to hit that bastard with everything they've got. He won't stop until he is stopped. This act is utterly revolting!

And at some point, the rest of us have to put up and join it. But nobody wants to go first, and I am in no way suggesting it would be a clean and easy decision, either. But Ukraine aren't going to win on their own. Russia has too many warm bodies and too few morals about sending 10 of them into the meat grinder to kill 1 Ukrainian. Sooner or later, Ukraine won't be able to sustain it anymore.

Russia still has nuclear weapons, and have threatened to use them multiple times.

I believe the reasons Russia hasn't used them are Putin is afraid of these
  • Western retaliation
  • due to defects/bad maintenance, fall out of sky inside Russia
  • missiles shot out of sky before detonating.
The Aviationist 16 June: Russian Combat Aircraft Have Recently Violated The Finnish Airspace Too
...
The last confirmed breach of Finnish airspace by Russia occurred in August 2022, when two Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Finnish airspace near the city of Porvoo for approximately two minutes.

The Long-Range Aviation mission on Jun. 10 preceded the second stage of the nuclear drills ordered by President Vladimir Putin in response to indications from Western officials that they would allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons.

Somewhere in Russia's security services that put Putin in power and gave him even more power.
There maybe adults that decide enough is enough if a Nuclear order goes out, it may not go further.
Putin may not like to test how 'absolute' his power is.

That may worry Putin more.
While he is killing off Russians that Russia deems expendable he gets rope,
until those who don't consider themselves expendable.

China may also have Russia on a leash re Nuclear weapons too.

Some might go in the wrong direction, or prevailing winds.
North Korea might start misfiring them much closer to China as well,
if its 'take your Nukes to work day'.

Other friends of Russia who are closer to the action may be even less impressed.

Its also terrible for consumer optimism to buy all the stuff China produces.
Not to mention risk investment free fall as money goes for safety.
So an economic calamity, when they are trying to get back to business.

Bad news is both sides think they are winning.

As a side note, an article in the right-leaning "Daily Mail" various NATO leaders have predicted a full out war with Russia in 20 years, 2044

How is the war going? — July 2024

Russia's Navy is Having a SERIOUS Crisis

Take a look at how the Russian navy has been defeated in the war in Ukraine.

Russia's navy is in serious trouble. Ever since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the degradation of the Russian military has become more and more apparent. This is probably most easily seen in the navy, with the Black Sea fleet being made functionally inactive, and the Baltic Fleet being made functionally irrelevant, with wide sweeping repercussions across the rest of the Russian navy as well.

Had a quick look, the channel seems to be mostly anti-Russian propaganda.  I'd take it with a large grain of salt.

Chinese Soldier Fighting For Russia exposes Putin's incompetence

The Military Show
...
Li was part of a veteran support force designed to help the larger offensive involving Russian soldiers, both by providing much-needed experience and simply overpowering the enemy.

The problem for Li – and many others in that first-wave force – was that this was their first time fighting in an urban warfare setting. His combat experience was far less valuable than he anticipated, with new recruits facing an even bigger challenge.

Then, he revealed the fatality rates. On average, he claims, the time a Russian soldier has from the moment they enter the battlefield to the moment they die is between eight and 10 hours. In other words, the vast majority won’t make it through an offensive.

Li claims to have spent about a month under these conditions, noting that many of the rooms and basements he fought through already being lined with rotting corpses from both sides. People died. Constantly. And, as Artem Katulin pointed out, Li’s team had no medical personnel to help them. In the end, Li claims, only he, a Russian soldier, a fighter from Nepal, and another mercenary he calls “Little Black” made it back from the offensive alive. All were carrying injuries.
