NZ Herald: Roe v Wade abortion ruling: National MP Simon O'Connor told to remove post

National Party leader Christopher Luxon says MP Simon O'Connor was asked to delete a social media post saying it was a "good day" after abortion rights in the US were curtailed because it "was causing distress and does not represent the position of the National Party."

O'Connor yesterday posted "today is a good day" on social media after the Supreme Court ruling overturning the Roe v Wade decision in the US – a step that means US states can ban abortion.

The post was later removed.

Luxon, whose personal views are also opposed to abortion, this morning confirmed O'Connor was asked to remove the post.

Perhaps this will backfire on the Republicans. The fastest way to make abortion legal again in many states will be new state laws allowing them, which could mean many moderate voters swinging Democrat to get those laws passed. The same could happen on the federal level as well.

 

Unfortunately I suspect the Democrats will screw up any opportunity this could give them.

I thought exactly the same thing when I heard of the decision. The right-wing have just handed the left-wing a cause to rally around, and for some it will be the only thing they consider when they decide who to vote for. More people are pro-abortion in the US than anti-abortion; as of 22nd May 2022 35% think it should be legal under any circumstance, 50% under certain circumstances, 13% illegal and 2% no opinion.

The lawyer that argued the case for overturning Roe vs Wade was the Mississippi Attorney General.

 

Mississippi is the poorest state in the Union and has the highest infant mortality rate and number of children living in poverty.

 

Go figure.

Next to Mississippi is Alabama.

In Alabama they say "Thank God for Mississippi, because it's the only state that keeps us off the bottom of 'the worst' lists",

What's no joke is Alabama , the 'Heart of Dixie" is completely surrounded by states which will the most draconian abortion laws, including literally legally equating an abortion with manslaughter.

So is you're a 17 year old girl from a poor family there's little chance you can get a safe abortion. Looking at the map, from Birmingham Alabama she's have to drive for 8 hours one way, or 850 KM, to get to a clinic.

Isn't it odd that at least two prominent Labour party MP's have expressed their opinions on the US abortion law change without any "cross examination" from the media yet when a relatively unknown National MP expresses a contrary opinion the media are like a Rottweiler hounding him for his position on the issue, even to the extent of trying to stir things up to have him removed as MP. Bias? Much!!!

 

IMO what the law makers do in the US has nothing to do with us here. I think all of our politicians should have stayed quiet on this sensitive and controversial issue. I think Christopher Luxon's response is as much as any of them should have said on the about it.

It is 100% clear where the Ardern government stands on this issue.

A hypothetical Luxon government led by a person who made a statement equating pregnancy termination with murder. Ok that's his view. Absolutely right for a journalist to ask a question about policy.

Luxon has made his policy decision 100% clear. I don't see a problem. Normal response to a topical event. Everyone is now clear where Luxon stands on the issue. These events look normal to me.

Those sort of antics are counter productive as well. Very few Pro-Choice advocates are seriously trying to legalize late term abortions (except in very exceptional circumstances). That sort of thing just makes them look as callous as the Pro-Lifers say they are.

NBC News: Louisiana and Utah trigger laws banning abortions temporarily blocked by courts

Judges in Louisiana and Utah on Monday temporarily blocked prohibitions on abortion in their states following last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ends a national right to the procedure.

The high court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, which for nearly 50 years had granted women the constitutional right to abortions. More than a dozen states set so-called trigger laws to take immediate effect banning or severely limiting abortions in the event Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Trigger laws were also being challenged in Arizona, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas.

A state judge in Louisiana issued a temporary restraining order Monday barring the state from enforcing its ban, leading to the immediate resumption of the procedure.

...Hours later, Utah Third District Judge Andrew Stone halted that state's trigger law effective immediately under a 14-day temporary restraining order...

"There is irreparable harm that has been shown," Stone said in granting the order. "Affected women are deprived of safe, local medical treatments to terminate pregnancies."...

No such right in the constitution of the United States'?

Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Imo this covers the three cases above adequately. No need for amendments there.
