Salon: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas blames Americans for Supreme Court's erosions of rights: "You protect your liberty"

Conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said that Americans are "more interested in their iPhones than their Constitution," according to a recently released book.

"I think we as citizens have lost interest and that's been my disappointment," Thomas said in an interview. "That certainly was something that bothered Justice Scalia, that people tend to be more interested in their iPhones than their Constitution. They're interested in what they want rather than what is right as a country."

,,, n recent months, Thomas has come under public scrutiny for his rulings on gun rights, abortion, and the seperation of church and state. Last week, ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that established America's constitutional right to abortion. In his concurring opinion, the conservative judge suggested that the court might also throw out the legal precedents for contraception, same-sex relations, and same-sex marriage.

Thomas has also come under fire over the activities of his wife, Ginni Thomas, a right-wing activist who played a key role in attempting to overthrow the 2020 election. During the months leading up to the Capitol riot, Ginni Thomas repeatedly encouraged Mark Meadows, Donald Trump's chief of staff, to continue challenging President Biden's win. Critics of Thomases have argued that their relationship poses a conflict of interest for Clarence Thomas' jurisprudence, and numerous House Democrats have already called on Thomas to resign from the court.

Oh noes! A Supreme Court judge who said he wouldn't touch abortion rights, only to later do a complete about face and change a law that personally doesn't affect him an any way, shape or form, gets upset when pro-choice protesters interrupt his dinner!

What did you expect, bro? You would make a life-altering decision like this and not get some blowback from the general public? Please.

Peter Butigigieg (I can never say his name right) summed the whole thing up quite nicely, and (as an added bonus) owned a Fox news host in the process: https://uproxx.com/viral/pete-buttigieg-fox-news-kavanaugh-protesters/

Can You Drive Alone in the {car-pooling high-occupancy vehicle lane} if You’re Pregnant? A Post-Roe Quandary.

A fundamental question in the abortion debate — when does a person’s life begin? — raises issues that extend far into the reaches of everyday life.

Even, perhaps, who gets to drive in a {car-pooling} H.O.V. lane.

Last month, Brandy Bottone of Plano, Texas, was pulled over by a Dallas sheriff’s deputy and given a ticket for driving alone in a high-occupancy vehicle lane. But, she argued, she was not alone. Ms. Bottone told the officer that she did not commit a violation because, by her logic, Texas’ abortion ban meant there were two people in her car, and she pointed to her belly.

The Texas penal code recognizes an individual as including an unborn child “at every stage of gestation,” but, unlike a few states, Texas has not passed a so-called fetal personhood bill related to abortion. S
...
Elizabeth Sepper, a law professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said acceptance of a fetal personhood standard would create new complications in all sorts of public policy realms. It could create new uncertainties around matters involving in vitro fertilization and the treatment of fertilized embryos, as well as exceptions to abortion bans in cases of rape and incest.

Ballot initiatives to define life as beginning at conception have failed in states such as Colorado and Mississippi, after medical providers warned that such laws could make some In vitro fertilization (IVF). procedures illegal.

Prof. Ziegler said a new legal definition of fetal personhood could also have sweeping implications on matters such as welfare, tax credits, child care and even population counts.

“Georgia’s law spells out that once a fetus is 6 weeks old, then you can claim that person as a dependent on tax returns,” she said.

I think Jim Bopp needs to "bopp" himself out of that role as soon as possible, and into something else where he's not dealing with women's reproductive rights at all, ever.

NPR: Voters in Kansas decide to keep abortion legal in the state, rejecting an amendment

Voters in Kansas rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment Tuesday that would have said there was no right to an abortion in the state, according to The Associated Press.

Kansas was the first state to vote on abortion rights since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson's Women's Health Organization.

President Joe Biden hailed Tuesday's vote and called on Congress to pass a law to restore nationwide abortion rights that were provided by Roe.

"This vote makes clear what we know: the majority of Americans agree that women should have access to abortion and should have the right to make their own health care decisions," Biden said in a statement.

Kansas For Constitutional Freedom, the main abortion rights group opposing the amendment, called the victory "huge and decisive."

"The people of Kansas have spoken," said Rachel Sweet, campaign manager for the group. "They think that abortion should be safe, legal and accessible in the state of Kansas."

This year, a record number of abortion questions will be on state ballots, and many are asking Kansas' decision Tuesday will be an indicator of what is to come.

This could bode well for the Democrats too. I read that even Trump was worried about his - and other Republicans - chances as a result of the abortion law being overturned:

The Independent: Arrested on suspicion of abortion: The Nebraska case that proved women can’t safely communicate on Facebook

A teenager and her mother are facing criminal charges in Nebraska for allegedly inducing an abortion. Celeste Burgess, 18, and Jessica Burgess, 41, both face felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly procuring medication to stop a pregnancy — in other words, buying abortion pills — and disposing of the fetus after it was stillborn. They have both pleaded not guilty, meaning that, unless they strike a deal with the prosecution in the coming months, they will face trial.

...Facebook released private messages between the mother and daughter when access to them was requested by investigators in Nebraska, according to The Associated Press. It was only after those private messages were reviewed that those investigators believed they had enough evidence to charge the mother with the abortion-related crime. And even though the daughter was a minor when all of this occurred, the state is now choosing to prosecute her as an adult.

...Facebook told the AP it was asked for data by the government 59,996 times in the second half of last year, and it provided information in about 88 percent of those times.

...But regardless of whether you believe Facebook should have fought a bit harder to keep the mother and daughter’s information private, the case is a compelling, urgent call for women to rethink how we use technology – and to think of how it may be used against us.

Mississippi is the the Supreme Court case used to abolish abortion rights.

Care to guess how this "pro-life" extremely Republican state Mississippi ranks on health after you're born?

Here's a clue: if it's a bad US state list, like infant mortality, they are number 1. If it's a good list, like literacy, they are last.
