The Washington Post - Opinion - Luxe and bagels (11 May)
While Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife didn’t see the need to disclose luxury vacations and other gifts from Harlan Crow, Justice Elena Kagan didn’t want to accept a gift basket of bagels.

To be sure, there are differences between Trump's case and Santos's case. But there are also similarities, too.

The NY Times - How to Raise $89 Million in Small Donations, and Make It Disappear
May 14, 2023
A group of conservative operatives using sophisticated robocalls raised millions of dollars from donors using pro-police and pro-veteran messages.
But instead of using the money to promote issues and candidates, an analysis by The New York Times shows, nearly all the money went to pay the firms making the calls and the operatives themselves, highlighting a flaw in the regulation of political nonprofits. ...
Since 2014, the five groups have pulled in $89 million from small-dollar donors who were pitched on building political support for police officers, veterans and firefighters.
But just 1 percent of the money they raised was used to help candidates via donations, ads or targeted get-out-the-vote messages, according to an analysis by The Times of the groups’ public filings.
About 90 percent of the money the groups raised was simply sent back to their fund-raising contractors [see above], to feed a self-consuming loop where donations went to find more donors to give money to find more donors.
They had no significant operations other than fund-raising, and along the way became one of America’s biggest sources of robocalls. ...
The groups continue to raise money.
Hopefully these things work differently in New Zealand. 🙄

Giuliani Sued For Demanding Sex From Staffer After Taking Viagra: Recording (dailyboulder.com)
According to a new complaint filed in New York state court on Monday, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani “took alcohol and Viagra constantly” and was recorded demanding sex from employee.
In the lawsuit, attorneys for Noelle Dunphy allege that Giuliani offered her employment for a salary of $1 million a year in 2019 when Giuliani was serving as an attorney for then-President Donald Trump.
The lawsuit claims Giuliani told Dunphy that her employment must remain secret because he was going through an acrimonious divorce. However, the complaint says, “Giuliani’s seemingly generous offers were a sham motivated by his secret desire to pursue a sexual relationship with Ms. Dunphy—in total disregard for the restraints that should have protected her as his employee and client.”
“He made clear that satisfying his sexual demands—which came virtually anytime, anywhere—was an absolute requirement of her employment and of his legal representation,” the lawsuit says.
Giuliani’s demands for sex were captured on recordings, according to court documents.

Sigh. From mayor of the year in 2001 to this. Rudy really has sunk to a new low. Of course, with Trump as his guiding light, one can't expect much.
Here's a deplorable that just can't let go. https://www.azmirror.com/2023/05/15/a-judge-is-mulling-lakes-last-ditch-attempt-to-overturn-the-2020-election/

The Washgington Post - Opinion - Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment stunt wrecks a big MAGA myth
19 may 2023
In the run-up to the expiration of covid-19 restrictions on those seeking asylum, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene repeatedly predicted that our country would be overrun by migrant hordes from the south.
Hundreds of thousands would “rush the border,” the Georgia Republican proclaimed, warning of an “Imminent Invasion!”
Since the Title 42 border policy ended last week, the average number of migrants crossing the border has dropped.
Yet Greene hasn’t missed a beat: On Thursday, she introduced impeachment articles against President Biden, proclaiming that the supposed migrant invasion is central to her case. She raged: “He is a direct threat to our national security.” ...
Greene has also called for impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas ...
The fantasy that the border is constantly in chaos has become a marker of MAGA identity.

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix (19 May 2023)
Q: Why is gerrymandering legal?
A: Because the Supreme Court has said it shouldn’t get involved in deciding how much gerrymandering is too much.
Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing congressional and legislative districts to give your political party an advantage.
It’s an old concept that often leads to strangely shaped districts as legislators try to draw themselves into a political safe space. ...
States such as California, Ohio and Hawaii have banned partisan gerrymandering, but it remains legal in many parts of the country.
Now the Supreme Court is considering a case that could make gerrymandering even more open to political abuse.
It’s looking at whether to give state legislatures ultimate control over gerrymandering congressional districts and prohibiting even state courts from getting involved.

The NY Times - Trump Ally Could Face Perjury Charge if He Doesn’t Cooperate With D.A.
19 May 2023
One of Donald J. Trump’s longtime lieutenants, Allen H. Weisselberg, was recently released from the notorious Rikers Island jail complex after pleading guilty to a tax fraud scheme.
Yet Mr. Weisselberg’s legal troubles are far from over.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office is now considering a new round of criminal charges against Mr. Weisselberg, 75, and this time he could be charged with perjury, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
The threat of new charges represents the latest effort in a two-year campaign to persuade Mr. Weisselberg to testify against Mr. Trump. ...
The potential perjury charges stem from statements Mr. Weisselberg made under oath during a 2020 interview with the office of the New York attorney general, Letitia James, who was conducting her own separate civil investigation into Mr. Trump and his family business.
