Opinion: Trump has good reason to fear DeSantis

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Harlan Crow, the Texas billionaire who lavished gifts and favors on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, isn’t a member of Congress, but Crow - through his lawyer - asserts that Congress lacks a “valid legislative purpose” in seeking information about their relationship.

Crow isn’t a Supreme Court justice, but he also asserts that Congress would be violating the constitutional separation of powers if it were to dare to apply ethics rules to the high court.

Crow attorney Michael D. Bopp sent a highhanded letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday that could be condensed to two words: "go away". ...

“After careful consideration, we do not believe the Committee has the authority to investigate Mr. Crow’s personal friendship with Justice Clarence Thomas. Most importantly, Congress does not have the constitutional power to impose ethics rules and standards on the Supreme Court. Doing so would exceed Congress’s Article I authority and violate basic separation of powers principles.” ...

Translation: "Clarence is above the law". 😏

Amanda Gorman, the American poet who shot to international stardom when she recited The Hill We Climb at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration, has vowed to defeat book bans in Florida after the poem was removed for reading by elementary school children in an educational institution in Miami-Dade county.

Gorman, 25, said she was “gutted” to learn that a complaint from a single parent led to her inaugural poem being banned from Bob Graham education center in Miami Lakes.

The poem was one of five books challenged by a parent of children at the school, including The ABCs of Black History and books on Cuba.

In the complaint, the parent mistakenly listed Oprah Winfrey as the author of The Hill We Climb, and said she objected to the poem because it was “not educational and have indirectly hate messages”.

If I was De Santis, I would have done a video recording (not just audio) maybe in an infomercial style, and run it across as many TV networks as possible, preferably during primetime. Doing it this way is only really going to capture people who were going to vote for him already anyway, and I get the feeling he did it this way to do it "on the cheap", as TV advertising is quite expensive.

It's a bit like Trump's rallies (or any politician, I guess) - if you don't like Trump, you're obviously not going to pay money to attend a rally and hear him speak. Ditto Biden. Or De Santis.

Ron DeSantis and Elon Musk announcement on Twitter

Remember Musk is not only the owner of Twitter; he is the past/present/future chief technology officer.

The Twitter PC experience, posted on Youtube, is actually the better user experience then the phone app experience, which had it's own hard crashes.

Also worth noting, in a classic boomer excuse, Musk said the problem was done to him "breaking the internet." Note that Twitch and other platforms regulalry exceeed 500,000 listeners, without a problem.

Transcript:

CRASH #1

6 minutes of silence / dead space then weird noises

about 15 seconds introduction by Elon, supporting Ron's COVID inaction, killing many elderly in Florida

CRASH #2

long 5 minute of silence

Musk: "we on? think so"

CRASH #3

Musk "voice manager..."

What would you like to tell us?"

Ron DeSantis(still badly distorted audio, likely a recording): "true" (random noises) "Yes I am running..."

Recording plays, several minutes passes, audio improves.

Then Musk and DeSantis start talking over the recording for about a minute.

Musk stop talking over recording, and recording continues...

CRASH #8
Then Musk and DeSantis start talking over the recording again.

For the fourth time (that we know of) Musk introduces DeSantis, talking over the recording, until DeSantis finishes his speech, and the pre-recording.

Then Musk after 32 minutes of technical problems, for the fifth time introduces Ron DeSantis

They are interrupted by feedback on the speakers. It seems they were both sitting at the same desk, without headphones on two laptops, and the speakers on one PC was getting picked up by the other PC.

[An anonymous Republican politician] has compared DeSantis to New Coke, with Donald Trump as the original.

In 1985, people who liked Coke as it was had no interest in a substitute, and people who did not like the original did not crave a tweaked imitation.

* a reference to the New Coke advertising fiasco of 1985 - "the most remarkable pratfall in the history of American marketing."
