Sideface: Isn't it strange how a sizeable portion of Trump's "bestest and brightest" end up failing or, in some cases, going to jail?

He was just keeping his promise to "Drain the swamp." For that, I thank him.

The Washington  Post - The 5-Minute Fix  27 July 2023

Aside from Trump, perhaps no one is in as much legal jeopardy in the fallout from the 2020 election as Giuliani.

  • Two Georgia election workers are suing him for making false claims about how they did their jobs, saying they were threatened and harassed because of it.

  • He might be disbarred in D.C. and lose his ability to practice law after filing frivolous lawsuits in several states alleging election fraud - suits even some Trump-appointed judges threw out.

  • His New York law license has been temporarily suspended.

  • He’s a target in the Georgia investigation of efforts to overturn election results there.

  • And the really big one: The federal investigation of the attempts to overturn election results and the events leading up to the attack on the Capitol, for which special counsel Jack Smith interviewed Giuliani last month.
The Post has reported that Giuliani coordinated the plan to set up illegitimate electors in swing states Trump lost.

The NY Times - Where Clarence Thomas Entered an Elite Circle and Opened a Door to the Court

09 July 2023   (extracts from a long article - ungated link above)

On Oct. 15, 1991, Clarence Thomas secured his seat on the Supreme Court, a narrow victory after a bruising confirmation fight that left him isolated and disillusioned.

Within months, the new justice enjoyed a far-warmer acceptance to a second exclusive club: the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, named for the Gilded Age author whose rags-to-riches novels represented an aspirational version of Justice Thomas’s own bootstraps origin story. ...

At Horatio Alger, he moved into the inner circle, a cluster of extraordinarily wealthy, largely conservative members who lionized him and all that he had achieved.  While he has never held an official leadership position, in some ways he has become the association’s leading light.

He has granted it unusual access to the Supreme Court, where every year he presides over the group’s signature event: a ceremony in the courtroom at which he places Horatio Alger medals around the necks of new lifetime members.  One entrepreneur called it “the closest thing to being knighted in the United States.” ...

His friendships forged through Horatio Alger have brought him proximity to a lifestyle of unimaginable material privilege. ...

I realise this post was a while ago but I came across this on Youtube last night and it reminded me of this.

If you're like me and grew up in the 80s and 90s you'll remember In Living Color, which started the career of Jim Carrey. Most of the content today would be very non-PC, but watching this first sketch again made me think of how Clarence Thomas hasn't changed too much since he started back in 1991. (Warning: all the other content may not be suitable for kids!)

The Guardian: Republican presidential candidate DeSantis aide fired after sharing video featuring symbol used by Nazis

An aide to Ron DeSantis who created and shared a video featuring a symbol used by Nazis and white supremacists was fired from the Florida governor’s Republican presidential campaign.
...
A DeSantis official told reporters: “Nate Hochman is no longer with the campaign. And we will not be commenting on him further.”
...
Like another controversial video, which attacked Donald Trump for being too supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, the video containing the Nazi symbol used internet memes popular on the far right and was retweeted from the account @desantiscams.

The Nazi symbol used in the Ron DeSantis video: Black sun

The DeSantis staffer name is Nate Hochman. Nate's tweet implies someone else created it. He's being misleading; Nate was the actual creator. So doubly sus.

Here's Nete's video tweeted. It's at the end and it's not subtle.

freitasm: These people are nazis.

That does explain why there were so many actual self-identified Nazis holding regular public sign parades in Florida in support of DeSantis.

I'd really really like to think that's all over now but this could well be a falling out over some random thing and the underlying relationship might not change at all.

Since Trump and Charlottesville and all that the whole actual Nazi thing just never seems to end.

Rikkitic:

As someone who witnessed the tragic assassination of Bobby Kennedy on television in 1968, I cannot begin to find words to express my overwhelming disappointment and deep regret at the behaviour of his son. Clearly the death of his father and subsequent lack of him as an adolescent severely warped his development. Bobby actually worked with Joe McCarthy in his youth, but he was clearly evolving into something much more than that when he was killed. Many people saw him as the great liberal hope. His death ended the American dream for a lot of them.

Regrettably, RFK jr is a nut case. He doesn't even look like his father, who was quite handsome and had an appealing manner. He spouts really crazy nonsense. He sounds like a meat grinder chewing on metal. There is nothing, nothing at all, of the father in the son. Except the name. Which he dishonours.

Speaking of Robert Kennedy (a few selections from this week's political cartoons)...

The Washington Post - Opinion - Aliens are among us - and they want to impeach Biden

28 July 2023

From this week’s House Oversight Committee hearing on unidentified anomalous phenomena (AKA UFOs):

The panel’s national security subcommittee brought in, as its star witness, one David Grusch, a former Defense Department intelligence official who now claims:

  •     That there are “quite a number” of “nonhuman” space vehicles in the possession of the U.S. government.

  •     That one “partially intact vehicle” was retrieved from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in 1933 by the United States, acting on a tip from Pope Pius XII.

  •     That the aliens have engaged in “malevolent activity” and “malevolent events” on Earth that have harmed or killed humans.

  •     That the U.S. government is also in possession of “dead pilots” from the spaceships.

  •     That a private defense contractor is storing one of the alien ships, which have been as large as a football field.

  •     That the vehicles might be coming “from a higher dimensional physical space that might be co-located right here.”

  •     That the Roswell, N.M., alien landing was real, and the Air Force’s debunking of it was a “total hack job.”

  •     And that the United States has engaged in a nearly century-long “sophisticated disinformation campaign” to hide the truth.

Alas, Grusch has no documents, photos or other evidence to corroborate any of his fantastic claims. It’s classified, you see.  😏

EDIT:  Watch it here:  Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs Hearing  (2 hr 34 min)

As Liz Cheney so succinctly put it, the trouble with Congress is that idiots keep getting elected to it.

This episode shows that things are way past the change needed. Senator Mitch McConnell is not well.
