The NY Times - Sam Bankman-Fried to Be Sent to Jail After Judge Revokes Bail

11 Aug 23

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, was ordered to jail on Friday after a federal judge in New York revoked his bail, in a dramatic twist less than two months before the case was set to go to trial.

Mr. Bankman-Fried, 31, had been under house arrest at his parents’ home in Palo Alto, Calif., since he was arrested in December on fraud charges stemming from FTX’s implosion.

But at Friday’s hearing, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of Federal District Court in Manhattan said that arrangement would have to end, after prosecutors argued that Mr. Bankman-Fried had given documents to the media to intimidate a witness in the case. ...

The courtroom scene was the latest development in one of the most stunning corporate implosions in recent memory.

The NY Times - Case Against Hunter Biden Could Go to Trial

breaking

Garland Appoints Weiss as Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Inquiry

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Friday elevated the federal prosecutor investigating President Biden’s son Hunter to the status of special counsel after negotiations to revive a plea agreement on tax and gun charges foundered - a signal that the yearslong inquiry has entered a new and unpredictable stage.

Mr. Garland, who made the announcement at the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington, named David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware who has handled the case since 2018, as special counsel.

Around the same time, prosecutors filed court papers indicating that they had reached an impasse with defense lawyers over a proposed plea deal that would have settled tax and gun charges against Hunter Biden, making clear that Mr. Biden might now face a new criminal indictment and a possible trial.

I think the crowd want McConnell to retire so he can be replaced with another Trump stooge/puppet.

As to Hunter Biden, I agree he did some stupid stuff, but it annoys me how Republicans are so quick to try and tie his bad dealings to Joe - yet Ivanka and Jared seem to be sort of separate to Trump and his wheelings and dealings, however you never hear any Republicans wanting to talk about that 🙄

Like Richard Sivell, if someone's on the social platform "Telegram", they are probably a deplorable or paedophile.

The platform has added a new feature: temporary posts that will disappear after a set period of time. When the feature was first rolled out, however, it was exclusive to Telegram's new Premium paid tier. Now, Telegram seems rolling out the feature to non-Premium users as well.

Is Hunter Biden an elected or appointed official or standing for office ?

Why drag him into a political discussion?

elpenguino:  Is Hunter Biden an elected or appointed official or standing for office ?  Why drag him into a political discussion?

A good question.

I agree that Hunter is not an elected or appointed official or standing for office.

However, he is the son of the current President - the most powerful elected official in the country.  He is also the target of public vilification by a sociopathic former President who is a current presidential candidate.

Some of Trump's criticism may be valid - we don't yet know.

Debate about Hunter Biden is already a major part of the current presidential campaign (at least, from the Republican perspective).

You can't get a much more "political" discussion than that.

Hunter Biden is a "political" figure, whether or not he wants to be.

( I didn't think that this item was suitable for the Trump sub-forum, and the Deplorables sub-forum seemed more appropriate. )

Deplorables attract deplorables... Marjorie Taylor Greene’s campaign manager to pay $25k over Ohio train derailment scam | Ohio train derailment | The Guardian

The manager of the 2020 campaign that launched the far-right politician Marjorie Taylor Greene to Congress has been ordered to pay $25,000 for his role in a charity scam aimed at capitalizing on the East Palestine train crash.

Isaiah Wartman and his business partner Luke Mahoney must each pay $22,000 in restitution as well as $3,000 in investigative costs and fees as part of a settlement with the Ohio attorney general’s office, which prosecuted the case. Meanwhile, the settlement calls for a co-founder of the fake charity, Michael Peppel, to pay a $25,000 civil penalty and be banned from starting, running or soliciting for any charitable organization in the state.

The Ohio Clean Water Fund for which Wartman and Mahoney served as fundraisers raised $149,000 in donations in the wake of the East Palestine train derailment disaster in Ohio. The charity claimed it would provide donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

But the Ohio Clean Water Fund only donated $10,000, and the charity pocketed the rest.

The NY Times - Republicans Wanted a Special Counsel Investigation of Hunter Biden. Now Many Oppose It.

12 August 2023

Congressional Republicans have for months repeatedly written to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland demanding he appoint a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, the president’s son, over his business dealings.

Some even demanded that a specific man be named to lead the inquiry: David C. Weiss, the Trump-appointed Delaware U.S. attorney who has long investigated the case.

But on Friday, after Mr. Garland elevated Mr. Weiss to special counsel status, Republicans in Congress reacted publicly not with triumph, but with outrage. “David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption,” Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee wrote on X [AKA Twitter].

The reaction was a notable political development, one that underscored both how Mr. Weiss, a Republican, has fallen in conservative circles, and how deeply it has become ingrained in the G.O.P. to oppose the Justice Department at every turn.

There's no pleasing some people.   😒

Reuters - Bankman-Fried used $100 million in stolen FTX funds for political donations

NEW YORK, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Sam Bankman-Fried used money he stole from customers of his FTX cryptocurrency exchange to make more than $100 million in political campaign contributions before the 2022 U.S. midterm elections, federal prosecutors said on Monday.

An amended indictment accused the 31-year-old former billionaire of directing two FTX executives to evade contribution limits by donating to Democrats and Republicans, and to conceal where the money came from.

"He leveraged this influence, in turn, to lobby Congress and regulatory agencies to support legislation and regulation he believed would make it easier for FTX to continue to accept customer deposits and grow," the indictment said.

The NY Times - Santos Aide Who Impersonated McCarthy Staff Member Faces Federal Charges

16 August 2023

A campaign associate of Representative George Santos who impersonated Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s former chief of staff was charged with wire fraud and identity theft in a federal indictment unsealed on Wednesday.

The aide, Samuel Miele, was arraigned Wednesday morning in Brooklyn federal court and released on $150,000 bond. He has pleaded not guilty.

He was accused by federal prosecutors of sending “fraudulent fund-raising” emails to more than a dozen potential contributors to an unnamed candidate. ...

The case against Mr. Miele was filed by the same prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York who are prosecuting Mr. Santos in a separate case involving wire fraud.

Mr. Santos has been charged with 13 counts of money laundering, wire fraud, theft of public funds and false statements following an investigation into his finances. He has pleaded not guilty.
